56 WHEREAS, The valiant military service of Hershel Woodrow
67 Williams is being saluted as part of the 2019 Medal of Honor Host
78 City Weekend in Gainesville; and
89 WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor
910 Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of
1011 individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's
1112 highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join
1213 together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal
1314 recipients to the city for a special series of events; and
1415 WHEREAS, U.S. Marine Corps Corporal "Woody" Williams earned
1516 his Medal of Honor at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, as
1617 a member of the 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division; for four
1718 desperate hours on February 23, 1945, he personally eliminated a
1819 number of reinforced concrete enemy pillboxes, destroying one after
1920 another with demolition charges or killing their defenders at close
2021 range with a flamethrower, all while under heavy fire; and
2122 WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of
2223 duty, Hershel Woodrow Williams fulfilled the highest ideals of the
2324 United States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting
2425 admiration of a grateful nation; now, therefore, be it
2526 RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas
2627 hereby pay tribute to Hershel Woodrow Williams on the occasion of
2728 the 2019 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend in Gainesville and commend
2829 him for his exemplary service in the defense of our nation; and, be
2930 it further
3031 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3132 prepared for Mr. Williams as an expression of high regard by the
3233 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
