| 11 | 12 | | highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join |

| 12 | 13 | | together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal |

| 13 | 14 | | recipients to the city for a special series of events; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, U.S. Marine Corps Corporal "Woody" Williams earned |

| 15 | 16 | | his Medal of Honor at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, as |

| 16 | 17 | | a member of the 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division; for four |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | desperate hours on February 23, 1945, he personally eliminated a |

| 18 | 19 | | number of reinforced concrete enemy pillboxes, destroying one after |

| 19 | 20 | | another with demolition charges or killing their defenders at close |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | range with a flamethrower, all while under heavy fire; and |

| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of |

| 22 | 23 | | duty, Hershel Woodrow Williams fulfilled the highest ideals of the |

| 23 | 24 | | United States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting |

| 24 | 25 | | admiration of a grateful nation; now, therefore, be it |

| 25 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas |
