| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor |

| 9 | 10 | | Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of |

| 10 | 11 | | individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's |

| 11 | 12 | | highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | recipients to the city for a special series of events; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A veteran of the United States Army, John Baca |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | served during the Vietnam War as a specialist fourth class with |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Company D, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division; while |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | on a night ambush mission, he realized that a platoon from his |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | company was under attack, and he led his recoilless rifle team |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | through a hail of enemy fire to come to their aid; a fragmentation |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | grenade was thrown into their midst, and without regard for his own |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | safety, he covered it with his steel helmet and fell on it as it |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | exploded, absorbing the lethal fragments and concussion; his |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | gallant and selfless action saved eight men from certain death or |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | grave injury; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of |

| 26 | 27 | | duty, John Baca fulfilled the highest ideals of the United States |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | armed forces, and he has earned the lasting admiration of a grateful |

| 28 | 29 | | nation; now, therefore, be it |
