| 11 | 12 | | highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join |

| 12 | 13 | | together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal |

| 13 | 14 | | recipients to the city for a special series of events; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A veteran of the U.S. Army, Michael Fitzmaurice |

| 15 | 16 | | served during the Vietnam War as a specialist fourth class with |

| 16 | 17 | | Troop D, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Division; while he was fighting at Khe Sanh, enemy combatants threw |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | explosive charges into his bunker; without regard for his own |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | safety, he hurled two of the charges out of the bunker and threw |

| 20 | 21 | | himself and his flak vest over the remaining charge, shielding |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | three fellow soldiers from the blast; though seriously wounded and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | experiencing partial vision loss, he charged out of the bunker and |

| 23 | 24 | | engaged in hand-to-hand combat, selflessly continuing to protect |

| 24 | 25 | | his comrades and refusing medical evacuation; and |

| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of |

| 26 | 27 | | duty, Michael Fitzmaurice fulfilled the highest ideals of the |

| 27 | 28 | | United States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting |

| 28 | 29 | | admiration of a grateful nation; now, therefore, be it |
