56 WHEREAS, The valiant military service of Walter Joseph Marm
67 Jr. is being saluted as part of the 2019 Medal of Honor Host City
78 Weekend in Gainesville; and
89 WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor
910 Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of
1011 individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's
1112 highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join
1213 together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal
1314 recipients to the city for a special series of events; and
1415 WHEREAS, U.S. Army Second Lieutenant Walter Marm earned his
1516 Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War, when he was a platoon leader
1617 with the 1st Cavalry Division; during an operation to relieve a
1718 friendly unit that was surrounded by the enemy, his platoon came
1819 under withering fire; after killing four enemy soldiers, he
1920 single-handedly attacked a concealed machine gun, first with an
2021 antitank weapon and then by charging it across 30 meters of open
2122 ground and lobbing hand grenades; finally, despite being wounded,
2223 he continued to use his rifle until he had killed all eight of the
2324 enemy soldiers manning the gun; and
2425 WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of
2526 duty, Walter Marm fulfilled the highest ideals of the United States
2627 armed forces, and he has earned the lasting admiration of a grateful
2728 nation; now, therefore, be it
2829 RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas
2930 hereby pay tribute to Walter Joseph Marm Jr. on the occasion of the
3031 2019 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend in Gainesville and commend him
3132 for his exemplary service in the defense of our nation; and, be it
3233 further
3334 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3435 prepared for Mr. Marm as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3536 House of Representatives and Senate.
