8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in 1943 to John and Augusta Cortelyou in |

9 | 10 | | Woodville, Mississippi, John Cortelyou first became a peace officer |
---|
10 | 11 | | when he joined the police department of Murray, Kentucky, serving |
---|
11 | 12 | | from 1962 to 1964; after working for nearly 10 years in the private |
---|
12 | 13 | | sector, he returned to law enforcement as a lieutenant in the Harris |
---|
13 | 14 | | County Sheriff's Department from 1973 to 1984, and from 1983 to |
---|
14 | 15 | | 1984, he also served as a reserve officer for the Dayton Police |
---|
15 | 16 | | Department; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Cortelyou went on to become a full-time officer |
---|
17 | 18 | | in Dayton, rising to the rank of sergeant and serving as assistant |
---|
18 | 19 | | chief; he later worked for the Hedwig Village Police Department, |
---|
19 | 20 | | and starting in 1994, he was an officer with the Spring Branch |
---|
20 | 21 | | Independent School District for 12 years, retiring in 2006 as |
---|
21 | 22 | | assistant chief; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Shortly after settling in Camp County, |

23 | 24 | | Mr. Cortelyou accepted the position of chief deputy in the county |
---|
24 | 25 | | sheriff's office, and in 2008, he was appointed to fill a vacancy as |
---|
25 | 26 | | county constable; he went on to be elected to three more terms, and |
---|
26 | 27 | | during his exemplary tenure, he served as the county's emergency |
---|
27 | 28 | | management coordinator and IT manager and drafted many grant |
---|
28 | 29 | | applications to benefit local law enforcement agencies; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Cortelyou has enjoyed the |
---|
30 | 31 | | love and support of his wife, Linda; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his exemplary 48 years in law |
---|
32 | 33 | | enforcement, John Cortelyou's dedication, courage, and commitment |
---|
33 | 34 | | to preserving the peace and security of the public have greatly |
---|
34 | 35 | | benefited his fellow Texans, and he may indeed reflect with pride on |

35 | 36 | | a career well spent as he embarks on the next exciting chapter of |

36 | 37 | | his life; now, therefore, be it |
