56 WHEREAS, John B. Cortelyou is retiring in February 2019 as
67 the Camp County constable, drawing to a close a notable career in
78 law enforcement that has spanned nearly half a century; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in 1943 to John and Augusta Cortelyou in
910 Woodville, Mississippi, John Cortelyou first became a peace officer
1011 when he joined the police department of Murray, Kentucky, serving
1112 from 1962 to 1964; after working for nearly 10 years in the private
1213 sector, he returned to law enforcement as a lieutenant in the Harris
1314 County Sheriff's Department from 1973 to 1984, and from 1983 to
1415 1984, he also served as a reserve officer for the Dayton Police
1516 Department; and
1617 WHEREAS, Mr. Cortelyou went on to become a full-time officer
1718 in Dayton, rising to the rank of sergeant and serving as assistant
1819 chief; he later worked for the Hedwig Village Police Department,
1920 and starting in 1994, he was an officer with the Spring Branch
2021 Independent School District for 12 years, retiring in 2006 as
2122 assistant chief; and
2223 WHEREAS, Shortly after settling in Camp County,
2324 Mr. Cortelyou accepted the position of chief deputy in the county
2425 sheriff's office, and in 2008, he was appointed to fill a vacancy as
2526 county constable; he went on to be elected to three more terms, and
2627 during his exemplary tenure, he served as the county's emergency
2728 management coordinator and IT manager and drafted many grant
2829 applications to benefit local law enforcement agencies; and
2930 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Cortelyou has enjoyed the
3031 love and support of his wife, Linda; and
3132 WHEREAS, Over the course of his exemplary 48 years in law
3233 enforcement, John Cortelyou's dedication, courage, and commitment
3334 to preserving the peace and security of the public have greatly
3435 benefited his fellow Texans, and he may indeed reflect with pride on
3536 a career well spent as he embarks on the next exciting chapter of
3637 his life; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas
3839 hereby congratulate John B. Cortelyou on his retirement as Camp
3940 County constable and extend to him sincere best wishes for
4041 continued happiness; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for Mr. Cortelyou as an expression of high regard by the
4344 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
