R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Austin native Baker Mayfield was recognized as the
best college football player in the nation in 2017, when he was
named the winner of the Heisman Trophy, an achievement that capped
off his exceptional tenure as the quarterback of the Oklahoma
Sooners; and
WHEREAS, The son of James and Gina Mayfield, Baker Mayfield
starred on the gridiron at Lake Travis High School; during his two
seasons as the team's starting quarterback, he threw for more than
6,000 yards and led the Cavaliers to a 25-2 record and the 2011
University Interscholastic League 4A state championship; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Mayfield began his collegiate career in 2013 as
a walk-on at Texas Tech University, where he quickly won the
starting job and went on to earn the Big 12 Freshman Offensive
Player of the Year award and to be named a Freshman All-American
honorable mention by College Football News; and
WHEREAS, After transferring to the University of Oklahoma, he
took over as the starting quarterback for the Sooners in 2015; he
set numerous records during his three years at Oklahoma and won 33
of the 39 games he started, including a victory over Auburn
University in the 2017 Sugar Bowl; in addition to becoming the first
walk-on player to win the Heisman Trophy, he collected numerous
other accolades for his stellar play as a senior, including the
Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, Manning, and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose
awards, as well as the Walter Camp, Associated Press, and Sporting
News Player of the Year honors; the first player chosen in the 2018
NFL Draft, he has now embarked on a promising professional career
with the Cleveland Browns, and during his debut season, he
established a new rookie quarterback record by throwing 27
touchdown passes; and
WHEREAS, In winning the Heisman Trophy, Baker Mayfield joined
the most elite fraternity in college football, and his
accomplishments have furthered the Lone Star State's proud legacy
of athletic achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Baker Mayfield on winning the 2017
Heisman Trophy and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Mayfield as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
