45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, For more than 125 years, residents of Matador have
67 come together to celebrate their faith at First Baptist Church of
78 Matador; and
89 WHEREAS, When the church, first known as Matador Missionary
910 Baptist Church, was organized on May 8, 1893, congregants gathered
1011 to worship in the town's schoolhouse and courthouse as well as in
1112 various homes; in 1906, members voted to construct their own
1213 sanctuary, and the new building was dedicated in 1907; and
1314 WHEREAS, As the congregation steadily increased in number, it
1415 outgrew the original structure on Dundee Street, and the current
1516 sanctuary was completed in 1942; located on South Main Street,
1617 First Baptist Church was dedicated on August 23, 1942, and over the
1718 years, it has undergone numerous improvements and expansions; and
1819 WHEREAS, Throughout FBC's history, its congregants have
1920 benefited from the able leadership of many devoted pastors,
2021 including J. C. Power and W. H. "Billy" Rattan, and the church
2122 continues to play a vital role in the community, providing its
2223 members with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth,
2324 fellowship, and outreach; and
2425 WHEREAS, First Baptist Church has long served as a source of
2526 inspiration and guidance to those who worship there, and its
2627 continued existence is a testament to the unwavering commitment of
2728 its members and clergy, both past and present; now, therefore, be it
2829 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
2930 Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of First
3031 Baptist Church of Matador and extend to the congregation sincere
3132 best wishes for many more years of shared prayer and fellowship;
3233 and, be it further
3334 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3435 prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3536 House of Representatives.
