5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, For more than 125 years, residents of Matador have |

6 | 7 | | come together to celebrate their faith at First Baptist Church of |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, When the church, first known as Matador Missionary |

9 | 10 | | Baptist Church, was organized on May 8, 1893, congregants gathered |

10 | 11 | | to worship in the town's schoolhouse and courthouse as well as in |
---|
11 | 12 | | various homes; in 1906, members voted to construct their own |
---|
12 | 13 | | sanctuary, and the new building was dedicated in 1907; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, As the congregation steadily increased in number, it |
---|
14 | 15 | | outgrew the original structure on Dundee Street, and the current |
---|
15 | 16 | | sanctuary was completed in 1942; located on South Main Street, |
---|
16 | 17 | | First Baptist Church was dedicated on August 23, 1942, and over the |
---|
17 | 18 | | years, it has undergone numerous improvements and expansions; and |

18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Throughout FBC's history, its congregants have |

19 | 20 | | benefited from the able leadership of many devoted pastors, |
---|
20 | 21 | | including J. C. Power and W. H. "Billy" Rattan, and the church |
---|
21 | 22 | | continues to play a vital role in the community, providing its |
---|
22 | 23 | | members with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth, |
---|
23 | 24 | | fellowship, and outreach; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, First Baptist Church has long served as a source of |

25 | 26 | | inspiration and guidance to those who worship there, and its |

26 | 27 | | continued existence is a testament to the unwavering commitment of |

27 | 28 | | its members and clergy, both past and present; now, therefore, be it |
---|
28 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

29 | 30 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of First |
---|
30 | 31 | | Baptist Church of Matador and extend to the congregation sincere |
---|
31 | 32 | | best wishes for many more years of shared prayer and fellowship; |
