45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Alvin Community College is celebrating its 70th
67 anniversary in 2019; and
78 WHEREAS, Approved by voters in the Alvin Independent School
89 District in 1948, the college was first administered by district
910 officials; it initially operated as part of Alvin High School,
1011 serving 134 students in grades 11 through 14; later, a separate
1112 facility was built for college-level academic work, and additional
1213 faculty members were hired; the standards of the Southern
1314 Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools were met in 1959, and
1415 Alvin Community College moved to its present campus in 1963; and
1516 WHEREAS, A separate administration, tax district, and
1617 college board were established in the 1971-1972 academic year for
1718 the newly created Alvin Junior College District; a few years later,
1819 citizens voted to almost double the geographical size of the
1920 district, and in 1975, voters approved an $8 million bond issue to
2021 meet the demands of growing enrollment; the service area was
2122 expanded further in 1998 with the founding of the Pearland Center,
2223 and in 2005, a nearly $20 million bond issue was approved to provide
2324 for a new science/health science building; continuing its
2425 partnership with the Pearland Independent School District, the
2526 college provides classes at Robert Turner College and Career High
2627 School; and
2728 WHEREAS, In 2017, the college achieved a record high
2829 enrollment of more than 5,800, and it now offers courses at 15
2930 different locations; designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution
3031 by the U.S. Department of Education, it is also one of 67 colleges
3132 in the country included in the Second Chance Pell pilot program;
3233 moreover, on four occasions, it has been named among the nation's
3334 top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute; and
3435 WHEREAS, Over the past seven decades, Alvin Community College
3536 has played a vital role in the community, providing students with
3637 the educational resources required to build a bright and prosperous
3738 future; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby commemorate the 70th anniversary of Alvin
4041 Community College and extend to all those associated with this
4142 noteworthy institution sincere best wishes for continued success;
4243 and, be it further
4344 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4445 prepared for the college as an expression of high regard by the
4546 Texas House of Representatives.
