5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The family, friends, and fellow soldiers of |

6 | 7 | | U.S. Army Master Sergeant Jonathan J. Dunbar of Austin suffered an |

7 | 8 | | immeasurable loss when he was killed in action in Manbij, Syria, on |
---|
8 | 9 | | March 30, 2018, at the age of 36; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Dunbar was deployed to Syria from his |
---|
10 | 11 | | assigned post at Headquarters, U.S. Army Special Operations Command |
---|
11 | 12 | | at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; supporting a mission as part of |
---|
12 | 13 | | Operation Inherent Resolve, he died when an improvised explosive |
---|
13 | 14 | | device detonated near his patrol; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A combat veteran who spent nearly 13 years in the |
---|
15 | 16 | | armed forces, Sergeant Dunbar enlisted in the army in May 2005; he |
---|
16 | 17 | | first served with the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry |
---|
17 | 18 | | Regiment, at Fort Bragg, and in the course of that assignment, he |
---|
18 | 19 | | supported combat operations in Iraq; he transitioned to the 2nd |
---|
19 | 20 | | Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, at Fort Hood in 2009, and during |
---|
20 | 21 | | his four years as a squad leader, he completed an Afghanistan |

21 | 22 | | deployment; after joining the U.S. Army Special Operations Command |

22 | 23 | | in 2013, he deployed three more times to Iraq and Afghanistan; and |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Dunbar received numerous honors in the |

24 | 25 | | course of his military service, including three Bronze Star Medals, |

25 | 26 | | four Army Commendation Medals, six Army Achievement Medals, the |
---|
26 | 27 | | National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign |

27 | 28 | | Medals, each with two Bronze Service Stars, the Global War on |

28 | 29 | | Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism |

29 | 30 | | Service Medal; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Exemplifying the highest ideals of the U.S. armed |

31 | 32 | | forces, Jonathan Dunbar inspired others with his fortitude, |

32 | 33 | | tenacity, and courage, and his fellow Americans owe him a debt of |

33 | 34 | | gratitude that the passage of time can never diminish; now, |
