45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Residents of Rains County are visiting Austin on
67 April 12, 2019, to celebrate Rains County Day at the State Capitol;
78 and
89 WHEREAS, Situated between Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork
910 Reservoir, Rains County is blessed with an abundant water supply
1011 and fertile soil characteristic of the Blackland Prairie region;
1112 the county was formed in the late 1800s from Hopkins, Hunt, and Wood
1213 Counties and named in honor of Emory Rains, an early pioneer who
1314 served in the Congress of the Republic of Texas; and
1415 WHEREAS, Rains County initially prospered as an agricultural
1516 and ranching center and today enjoys a diverse economy that
1617 includes oil production, manufacturing, and tourism; and
1718 WHEREAS, The county seat, Emory, which was originally known
1819 as Springville, is now the county's largest town; it is home to the
1920 annual Eagle Fest celebration held in the winter, when the area
2021 lakes are the home of many American bald eagles and other rare
2122 birds; and
2223 WHEREAS, The city of Point was incorporated in the 1960s and
2324 is recognized as the birthplace of the National Farmers Union; the
2425 10 founding fathers of the NFU are memorialized by a historical
2526 monument in the city, which incorporates a statue of the union's
2627 founder, Isaac Newton Gresham, and a display of the flags of the
2728 NFU's member states; and
2829 WHEREAS, The county's newest municipality, East Tawakoni,
2930 was incorporated in 1967; this resort area offers residents the
3031 benefits of a relaxed rural community while providing easy access
3132 to Dallas; notably, the city is connected to its counterpart, West
3233 Tawakoni in Hunt County, by Two-Mile Bridge; completed in 2016,
3334 this impressive structure replaced the original Two-Mile Bridge,
3435 which was built across Lake Tawakoni in 1959 and was the longest
3536 bridge serving a farm-to-market road at the time of its
3637 construction; and
3738 WHEREAS, One of the smallest counties in the state, but one of
3839 the fastest growing in the nation, Rains County is playing a vital
3940 role in the story of the Lone Star State, and its citizens are
4041 indeed deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby recognize April 12, 2019, as Rains County Day at
4344 the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
4445 best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
