| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Paul O. Meriwether is stepping down as mayor of |

| 6 | 7 | | Mount Pleasant in the summer of 2019, following 28 years of |

| 7 | 8 | | distinguished service in city government; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, First elected to the Mount Pleasant City Council in |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | 1991, Dr. Meriwether won reelection 10 times, and in 2011, he |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | successfully ran for mayor; he has provided skilled leadership in a |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | period of tremendous growth, and his tenure in public office has |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | seen numerous improvements to the city, including the completion of |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Mount Pleasant Regional Airport and Heritage Park, as well as |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | significant upgrades to city streets and other infrastructure; |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | under his watch, a major downtown renovation brought the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | transformation of The Alley on Third and a new home for the public |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | library, and he has also helped oversee the construction of a new |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | animal shelter and soccer park; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Meriwether was born in Nacogdoches and moved to |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Mount Pleasant in grade school; after earning his bachelor's degree |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | with honors at Austin College, he went on to graduate from The |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where he also |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | performed his residency in family medicine; he serves as medical |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | director of Cypress Basin Hospice and of the Titus Regional Medical |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Center Community Care Center; previously, he was medical director |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | of the medical center's Rural Health Clinic for more than two |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | decades; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Dr. Meriwether is supported by |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | the love and encouragement of his wife, Becky, and their children, |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | John, Allison, Kemberly, and Paula; he is the proud grandfather of |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Olivia and Jonathan; and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Paul Meriwether has done much to bring progress and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | positive change to Mount Pleasant during more than a quarter |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | century of public service, and his efforts have produced results of |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | lasting benefit to his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |

| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby honor Mount Pleasant Mayor Paul O. Meriwether |

| 38 | 39 | | for his long record of service to the city and extend to him sincere |

| 39 | 40 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
