45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Family-owned businesses play a vital role in the
67 communities of the Lone Star State, and in 2019, the Garcia family
78 is celebrating the 80th anniversary of Division Laundry of San
89 Antonio; and
910 WHEREAS, Peter C. Garcia, an immigrant from San Luis Potosí,
1011 Mexico, founded Division Laundry as a one-man operation in a small
1112 building inside Fort Sam Houston in 1939; his business originally
1213 provided laundry and sewing services to members of the 2nd Infantry
1314 Division, and after it outgrew its location, Mr. Garcia moved it
1415 into a facility on North New Braunfels Avenue; he again relocated
1516 the business to a new building designed by the National Institute of
1617 Laundering and the National Dry Cleaning Institute in 1964, and
1718 within a decade, it began to transition from being a military
1819 uniform processor to a laundry linen processor; and
1920 WHEREAS, In 1992, Mr. Garcia's wife, Cecilia Garcia, became
2021 president of Division Laundry; the business continued to flourish
2122 under her leadership and later under the guidance of the couple's
2223 son, Patrick R. Garcia, its current president; the strength and
2324 resilience of the Garcia family were instrumental in rebuilding the
2425 company after its plant was devastated by a fire in 2001, and two
2526 years later, they celebrated the opening of a new plant in its
2627 place; in honor of the company's "rise from the ashes," a stylized
2728 phoenix now appears on its logo and branding; and
2829 WHEREAS, Today, Division Laundry continues to honor its
2930 founder's commitment to service and workmanship, and the Garcias
3031 are now welcoming a third generation of family members, Patricia
3132 Luna, Patrick A. Garcia, and Theresa Garcia, onto the leadership
3233 team; through the years, the company has established contracts with
3334 clients that include hospital systems and hotel chains, and it is a
3435 major provider of jobs in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area of
3536 San Antonio; and
3637 WHEREAS, Over the course of eight decades, the Garcia
3738 family's hard work, vision, and commitment to excellence have made
3839 Division Laundry an inspiring success story, and it is a pleasure to
3940 join in congratulating its members on this special milestone; now,
4041 therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby commemorate the 80th anniversary of Division
4344 Laundry of San Antonio and extend to its current owners sincere best
4445 wishes for the future; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for the Garcia family as an expression of high regard by
4748 the Texas House of Representatives.
