5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Lufkin and Angelina County are |

6 | 7 | | gathering in Austin on February 20, 2019, to celebrate Lufkin and |

7 | 8 | | Angelina County Day at the State Capitol; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Set among the pine and hardwood forests of East |
---|
9 | 10 | | Texas, this verdant area was first inhabited by the Caddo and |
---|
10 | 11 | | Atakapan people; the county is said to be named after a Hainai |
---|
11 | 12 | | Indian girl who aided Spanish missionaries in the early 1690s; and |
---|
12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1801, a settler named Vicente Micheli purchased |
---|
13 | 14 | | five and a half leagues of land in the area from the chief of the |
---|
14 | 15 | | Bedias tribe; Anglo-American settlers began to arrive in 1820, and |
---|
15 | 16 | | the Mexican government issued land grants in the region in the |
---|
16 | 17 | | mid-1830s; after Texas independence, Angelina County was |
---|
17 | 18 | | established from part of Nacogdoches County in 1846, and Lufkin was |

18 | 19 | | made county seat in 1892; and |

19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Following the arrival of the first railroad in 1882, |

20 | 21 | | lumber became the foundation of Angelina County's economy; by the |

21 | 22 | | turn of the 20th century, the nation's need for southern pine |

22 | 23 | | supported more than 15 lumber companies in the county; today, |
---|
23 | 24 | | lumber, paper, and the manufacturing of oil-field equipment |
---|
24 | 25 | | continue to be mainstays of the county's economy; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike enjoy the region's fine |
---|
26 | 27 | | recreational opportunities; the Angelina National Forest is a |
---|
27 | 28 | | favorite for hikers and campers, while the Sam Rayburn Reservoir is |
---|
28 | 29 | | known for its boating, fishing, and waterskiing; the county's |
---|
29 | 30 | | forestlands are also a prime habitat for many species of birds, |
---|
30 | 31 | | drawing bird-watchers from around the state and nation; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, As the largest town and the seat of government, |
---|
32 | 33 | | Lufkin serves as the center of operations for many of the businesses |
---|
33 | 34 | | in the county, particularly those relating to lumber and wood |
---|
34 | 35 | | products; that industry's development is chronicled at the Texas |
---|
35 | 36 | | Forestry Museum, and the city includes several other notable |
---|
36 | 37 | | attractions, including the Museum of East Texas, the Ellen Trout |
---|
37 | 38 | | Zoo and Park, and the Medford Collection of American Western Art, |
---|
38 | 39 | | which exhibits the work of notable contemporary artists; in |

39 | 40 | | addition, Lufkin is home to the main campus of Angelina College; and |

40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build |

41 | 42 | | an even brighter future, the citizens of Lufkin and Angelina County |

42 | 43 | | may take great pride in the important role their unique region |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 20, 2019, as Lufkin and |

47 | 48 | | Angelina County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |

48 | 49 | | delegation best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in |
