5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Refugee Advocacy Day is being recognized at the |

6 | 7 | | State Capitol April 9, 2019; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Texans have demonstrated compassion |

8 | 9 | | and public spirit in welcoming refugees to the Lone Star State; in |

9 | 10 | | turn, those refugees have helped to strengthen the state's economy, |
---|
10 | 11 | | contributing to the success of more than 900 Texas companies and |
---|
11 | 12 | | stimulating the market with a spending power of $4.6 billion; and |
---|
12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Embodying the resilience, determination, and |
---|
13 | 14 | | optimism that have always defined the American spirit, many |
---|
14 | 15 | | refugees have gone on to become business owners and industry |
---|
15 | 16 | | leaders; in addition, the taxes they pay more than compensate for |
---|
16 | 17 | | their use of shared public services, with refugees on average |
---|
17 | 18 | | contributing a net amount of $21,000 during their first 20 years in |
---|
18 | 19 | | the country; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Refugees resettled in Texas add to the economic and |
---|
20 | 21 | | cultural richness of our state, and the individuals and |
---|
21 | 22 | | organizations who have helped refugees rebuild their lives here are |

22 | 23 | | indeed deserving of acknowledgment for setting a humanitarian |
---|
23 | 24 | | example that is respected and admired around the world; now, |

24 | 25 | | therefore, be it |

25 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

26 | 27 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 9, 2019, as Refugee Advocacy Day |

27 | 28 | | at the State Capitol and extend to all those participating in this |
---|
28 | 29 | | event sincere best wishes for the future. |
