45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Refugee Advocacy Day is being recognized at the
67 State Capitol April 9, 2019; and
78 WHEREAS, Over the years, Texans have demonstrated compassion
89 and public spirit in welcoming refugees to the Lone Star State; in
910 turn, those refugees have helped to strengthen the state's economy,
1011 contributing to the success of more than 900 Texas companies and
1112 stimulating the market with a spending power of $4.6 billion; and
1213 WHEREAS, Embodying the resilience, determination, and
1314 optimism that have always defined the American spirit, many
1415 refugees have gone on to become business owners and industry
1516 leaders; in addition, the taxes they pay more than compensate for
1617 their use of shared public services, with refugees on average
1718 contributing a net amount of $21,000 during their first 20 years in
1819 the country; and
1920 WHEREAS, Refugees resettled in Texas add to the economic and
2021 cultural richness of our state, and the individuals and
2122 organizations who have helped refugees rebuild their lives here are
2223 indeed deserving of acknowledgment for setting a humanitarian
2324 example that is respected and admired around the world; now,
2425 therefore, be it
2526 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
2627 Legislature hereby recognize April 9, 2019, as Refugee Advocacy Day
2728 at the State Capitol and extend to all those participating in this
2829 event sincere best wishes for the future.
