 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Across the nation, April 2020 is being observed as
 Distracted Driving Awareness Month; and
 WHEREAS, Created by the National Safety Council, the campaign
 aims to tackle the growing problem of distracted driving, which
 encompasses such risky actions as talking on a cell phone, texting,
 eating, or grooming while behind the wheel; and
 WHEREAS, Each year, more than 100,000 automobile crashes in
 Texas involve distracted driving; a survey conducted by the Texas
 A&M Transportation Institute revealed that 38 percent of Texas
 motorists talk on their cell phones at least some of the time while
 driving, and more than 21 percent of drivers read or send text
 messages or e-mails; and
 WHEREAS, According to the National Safety Council and the
 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, recent years have
 seen the largest percentage increase in traffic fatalities in the
 United States in over half a century; while multiple factors
 contribute to traffic deaths, the risk of distracted driving due to
 technology is growing; and
 WHEREAS, Increased public awareness of these dangers is key
 to reducing incidents of distracted driving, and the monthlong
 observance in April is an opportunity for Texans to affirm their
 commitment to making our roadways safer for all; now, therefore, be
 it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize April 2020 as Distracted Driving
 Awareness Month in Texas and encourage residents of the Lone Star
 State to support this worthwhile event.
