| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, On May 8, 2020, Americans are paying tribute to the |

| 6 | 7 | | sacrifice and resilience of the wives and husbands of our nation's |

| 7 | 8 | | military personnel with the commemoration of Military Spouse |

| 8 | 9 | | Appreciation Day; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, This special observance originated in April 1984, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | when President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5184, which |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | recognized the profound contribution spouses make to the readiness |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | and well-being of those in uniform; in 1999, the U.S. Congress made |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Military Spouse Appreciation Day part of National Military |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Appreciation Month, and the Department of Defense subsequently |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | stipulated that this day be celebrated each year on the Friday |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | before Mother's Day; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In a very real sense, military spouses serve |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | alongside our nation's soldiers, sailors, marines, and members of |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | the air force and coast guard; these husbands and wives cope with |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | frequent relocations, manage the home during periods of separation, |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | and provide the moral and emotional support their spouses need to |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | defend our country; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Even as they endure the heartache of long |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | deployments, these silent heroes bear the responsibility of |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | sustaining their families and caring for their children, and they |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | play a vital role in helping returning service members reintegrate |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | and readjust to life at home; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have sons and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | daughters whose love of country leads them to military service, and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | it is indeed fitting that we honor their spouses, whose fortitude |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | and patriotism continue to be an inspiration to us all; now, |

| 32 | 33 | | therefore, be it |

| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 8, 2020, as Military Spouse |
