56 WHEREAS, The Texas Tech men's basketball program achieved a
67 new level of success during the 2018-2019 season, as the Red Raiders
78 advanced all the way to the NCAA Division I national championship
89 game; and
910 WHEREAS, In the course of an unforgettable season, the Texas
1011 Tech players repeatedly surpassed expectations; with their
1112 inspired play against their Big 12 foes, they earned a share of the
1213 regular season conference title, claiming that trophy for the first
1314 time ever; Tech was rewarded with an invitation to the "Big Dance"
1415 of the NCAA tournament and embarked on a thrilling run that
1516 electrified the Red Raider faithful; and
1617 WHEREAS, After defeating Northern Kentucky and Buffalo,
1718 Texas Tech upset the highly ranked Michigan and Gonzaga squads to
1819 earn its first trip to the Final Four; in the semifinals, the Red
1920 Raider defense demonstrated its trademark tenacity, leading the
2021 team to a 61-51 win over Michigan State and setting the stage for
2122 the title game showdown against Virginia; in that contest, the Tech
2223 players gave their all through four hard-fought quarters and an
2324 overtime period but saw their season come to an end just one win
2425 short of the national championship; and
2526 WHEREAS, The Red Raiders had numerous heroes during their
2627 history-making campaign; Lubbock native Jarrett Culver was named
2728 the Big 12 Player of the Year, and he and Matt Mooney earned spots on
2829 the Final Four All-Tournament Team; valuable leadership was
2930 provided by veteran players Norense Odiase, Brandone Francis, and
3031 Tariq Owens, while sophomores Davide Moretti and Deshawn Corprew
3132 and freshman Kyler Edwards were also key to Tech's success; the team
3233 was guided by head coach Chris Beard, who was named the Associated
3334 Press Men's College Basketball Coach of the Year and the Big 12
3435 Coach of the Year for his outstanding efforts; and
3536 WHEREAS, By proving itself one of the top teams in college
3637 basketball, Texas Tech has furthered the Lone Star State's
3738 reputation for sports excellence and ushered in an exciting new era
3839 for Red Raider athletics, and its achievements are a source of great
3940 pride for the university's students, alumni, and fans; now,
4041 therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby congratulate the Texas Tech University men's
4344 basketball team on advancing to the championship game of the 2019
4445 NCAA Division I tournament and extend to the team's players,
4546 coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
4647 further
4748 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4849 prepared for the Red Raiders as an expression of high regard by the
4950 Texas House of Representatives.
