| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The strength and cohesion of our communities are |

| 6 | 7 | | enhanced by the devoted efforts of individuals such as Dr. Roger |

| 7 | 8 | | I. Van Horn, whose tireless work has contributed immeasurably to |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | the quality of life in Nacogdoches; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dr. Van Horn attended |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Nathan Hale High School and continued his education at Westminster |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | College; he went on to graduate from the University of Missouri in |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | 1970 with a degree in dentistry; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Van Horn then joined the U.S. Army, attaining |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | the rank of major while serving as an army dentist; after leaving |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | the military in 1975, he established a private dental practice in |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Nacogdoches and served local residents for nearly four decades |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | before retiring in 2014; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, A dedicated champion of his community, Dr. Van Horn |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | held the office of Mayor of Nacogdoches from 2007 to 2017; he has |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | also held leadership roles with the Nacogdoches County Chamber of |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Commerce, the Nacogdoches County Economic Development Corporation, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | the Nacogdoches Jaycees, and CASA of Deep East Texas; moreover, he |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | helped establish the Heritage Heralds and the Nacogdoches Youth |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Soccer Association, and he ministers to prisoners in Henderson; in |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | recognition of his efforts, he was named the Nacogdoches Citizen of |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | the Year in 2013 and inducted into the Nacogdoches Heritage |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Festival Hall of Fame in 2015; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Van Horn is the devoted father of two sons, |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Matthew and Jacob, and he also takes great pride in his four |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | grandchildren, Eloise, Ivan, Anna Everett, and Leo; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Roger Van Horn has demonstrated a lasting commitment |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | to making Nacogdoches a better place for all, and in so doing, he |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | has earned the deep respect and appreciation of his fellow |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | residents; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commend Dr. Roger I. Van Horn for his service to |

| 37 | 38 | | the Nacogdoches community and extend to him sincere best wishes for |

| 38 | 39 | | the future; and, be it further |
