| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly |

| 6 | 7 | | cause for celebration, and Esthermay Cornwell Johnston of Austin is |

| 7 | 8 | | reaching that impressive milestone on May 13, 2019; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, in 1919, Esthermay |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Johnston moved to Beaumont with her family during the Great |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Depression, when she was 12 years old; she attended Stephen F. |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Austin State University, and her election as "Miss Daisy Mae" led to |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | her first date with Everett Johnston; married in 1942, they became |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | the proud parents of a daughter, Mary Luretta, and they were later |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | blessed with two granddaughters, Virginia and Madeline; the couple |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | shared a rewarding marriage of 54 years before Mr. Johnston's |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | passing; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnston taught in public schools for three |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | decades, and she spent the majority of her career at Margaret B. |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Henderson Elementary School in the Dallas Independent School |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | District, where she took a whole child approach to address the |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | comprehensive needs and long-term development of her students; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, A woman of faith, Mrs. Johnston is a lifelong member |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); she was the first |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | woman to be named elder emeritus at Rosemont Christian Church in |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Dallas, and she was also named life elder at University Christian |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Church in Austin, where she remains active in the congregation; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Esthermay Johnston is a source of wisdom and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | inspiration, and she holds a special place in the hearts of all |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | those who are fortunate enough to know her; now, therefore, be it |

| 30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 31 | 32 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Esthermay Cornwell Johnston on the |

| 32 | 33 | | joyous occasion of her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best |
