| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

| 6 | 7 | | passing of Joyce Kathleen Giddens Matthews on April 6, 2019, at the |

| 7 | 8 | | age of 71; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The former Joyce Giddens was born to J. T. and Effie |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Giddens on October 15, 1947, in Refugio; after graduating from |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Victoria High School, she continued her education at Our Lady of the |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Lake University and Trinity University in San Antonio; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, A talented artist, Ms. Matthews began winning |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | prizes and selling her artwork at an early age, and she painted sets |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | for many Victoria Independent School District productions before |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | and after her graduation; over the years, she designed lighting for |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Theatre Victoria, served as a technical director for musicals at |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Victoria College, and worked as a stage and production manager with |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | the Victoria Fine Arts Association and the Victoria Symphony; |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | moreover, she sang with the Victoria Bach Festival and mentored |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | numerous actors and tech personnel; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Passionate about history as well, Ms. Matthews went |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | on numerous archaeological digs around Texas and donated several of |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | the artifacts she discovered to the Museum of the Coastal Bend; she |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | was also active in the Texas Historical Commission and helped |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | organize a statewide meeting in Victoria; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Ms. Matthews enjoyed the love |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | and support of her husband, George Matthews, whom she wed on August |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | 16, 1980; the couple shared a rewarding union that spanned nearly |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | four decades; and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Although Joyce Matthews will be deeply missed, she |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | has left her family and many friends with a wealth of memories that |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | they will forever treasure; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Joyce Kathleen |

| 35 | 36 | | Giddens Matthews and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn |

| 36 | 37 | | her passing; and, be it further |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

|---|
| 39 | 40 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Joyce |
