56 WHEREAS, Proud residents and representatives of The Colony
67 are gathering at the State Capitol in Austin on January 29, 2019;

89 WHEREAS, Situated on Lake Lewisville in southeastern Denton
910 County, The Colony was created from the Peters Colony grant by the
1011 Texas Legislature in 1846; the city is located on the site of the
1112 Hedgecoxe War of 1852, in which an armed uprising of settlers
1213 protested an attempt by the Texas Emigration and Land Company to
1314 compromise their land claims; the 1902 opening of a railroad line
1415 shifted the local economy from cattle raising to cotton farming,
1516 and the region returned to its agricultural roots until the
1617 mid-1900s; and
1718 WHEREAS, Following the construction of the Lake Lewisville
1819 dam, a Dallas-based residential developer purchased the land and
1920 named the new lakeside housing community The Colony to honor the
2021 region's early history; the first families moved into their homes
2122 in 1974, and by 1977 The Colony had over 3,500 residents and was
2223 incorporated as a city; and
2324 WHEREAS, With a population of more than 42,000 today, The
2425 Colony is home to 28 parks and more than 3,000 acres of stunning
2526 green space, including an impressive trail system that runs along
2627 23 miles of shoreline; the city boasts a number of state-of-the-art
2728 athletic facilities, such as the Five Star Complex, and several
2829 award-winning golf courses, including the Old American Golf Club;
2930 and
3031 WHEREAS, Known for its endless outdoor amenities, The Colony
3132 offers outstanding opportunities for residents and visitors alike
3233 to enjoy camping, fishing, boating, and waterskiing; an assortment
3334 of programs and events are offered to the public throughout the
3435 year, including dances, movies in the park, musical performances,
3536 campouts, and various holiday celebrations; and
3637 WHEREAS, With a strong sense of community, a high quality of
3738 life, and a vibrant suburban atmosphere, The Colony is a desirable
3839 community in which to live and work, and the members of its visiting
3940 delegation, including Mayor Joe McCourry, councilman Richard
4041 Boyer, city manager Troy Powell, director of community relations
4142 Joe Perez, and director of government relations Brant
4243 Shallenburger, may indeed take pride in the place they call home;
4344 now, therefore, be it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4546 Legislature hereby honor the visiting delegation from The Colony on
4647 the occasion of their visit to the State Capitol on January 29,
4748 2019, and extend to them sincere best wishes for a meaningful and
4849 memorable visit to Austin.
