5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |

6 | 7 | | a close with the passing of Dr. Mary Elizabeth Laing Springs, |

7 | 8 | | superintendent of Three Rivers Independent School District, on |

8 | 9 | | February 13, 2019, at the age of 54; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of the Reverend Charles Laing Sr. and |
---|
10 | 11 | | Peggy Ann Donaldson Laing, the former Mary Laing was born in Austin |
---|
11 | 12 | | on December 17, 1964; she grew up with the companionship of two |
---|
12 | 13 | | siblings, Charles and Nicole, and moved frequently throughout the |
---|
13 | 14 | | state in her youth due to her father's career as a preacher; in the |
---|
14 | 15 | | eighth grade, she relocated with her family to Georgetown, and she |
---|
15 | 16 | | went on to graduate from Georgetown High School, where she was a |
---|
16 | 17 | | state champion on the debate team; an alumna of Centenary College of |
---|
17 | 18 | | Louisiana, she earned a master's degree from Texas State University |
---|
18 | 19 | | in 1996 and an educational doctorate from Texas A&M University in |
---|
19 | 20 | | 2015; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Springs taught school in Killeen, Lake Jackson, |
---|
21 | 22 | | and Lockhart and transitioned into administration when she was |
---|
22 | 23 | | hired as an assistant principal and principal in Seguin ISD; after |
---|
23 | 24 | | serving as the principal of Navarro High School in Geronimo, she |
---|
24 | 25 | | moved to Kingsville in 2006 to become superintendent of Santa |
---|
25 | 26 | | Gertrudis ISD, where she notably helped to establish the district's |
---|
26 | 27 | | football program; she joined Three Rivers ISD as superintendent in |
---|
27 | 28 | | 2016; known for always putting students first in all of her |
---|
28 | 29 | | decisions, she found much fulfillment in having the opportunity to |
---|
29 | 30 | | help young people build a foundation for future success; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Dr. Springs enjoyed the love |
---|
31 | 32 | | and support of her husband, Wayne Springs; she took great pride in |
---|
32 | 33 | | her daughters, Elizabeth, Grace, and Madison, and her life was |
---|
33 | 34 | | further enriched by the affection she shared with her siblings, her |
---|
34 | 35 | | nieces, Chelsea and Calista, her nephew, Chase, and her cherished |
---|
35 | 36 | | bulldog, Bossy; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The loss of Dr. Mary Springs is keenly felt by her |
---|
37 | 38 | | loved ones, her friends, and the many individuals whose lives she |
---|
38 | 39 | | touched over the course of her stellar career in education, and they |
---|
39 | 40 | | will forever treasure their memories of this remarkable woman; now, |
---|
40 | 41 | | therefore, be it |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Mary Elizabeth |

43 | 44 | | Laing Springs and extend deepest condolences to all those who mourn |

44 | 45 | | her passing; and, be it further |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

46 | 47 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
