45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Stars and Strides Stables Therapeutic Riding
67 Center in Weatherford has enriched the lives of children and adults
78 with disabilities by giving them the opportunity to experience the
89 myriad benefits of horseback riding; and
910 WHEREAS, The nonprofit organization was founded in 2012 by
1011 owners David and Teresa Miller, whose daughter, Courtney, was born
1112 with Kabuki syndrome, a condition associated with various physical
1213 and cognitive differences; the Millers enrolled Courtney in
1314 equine-assisted therapy when she was nine years old and were
1415 impressed with the impact it had on both her health and self-esteem;
1516 Ms. Miller, who earned certification as an equine therapy
1617 instructor through the Professional Association of Therapeutic
1718 Horsemanship International, was inspired to open a facility of her
1819 own in Parker County; the organization has since grown from serving
1920 two clients to approximately 50 clients per week, and it has added a
2021 number of experienced former show horses to its stables; and
2122 WHEREAS, Stars and Strides provides equine-assisted therapy
2223 to children and adults with a variety of different disabilities,
2324 and it now includes a Protectors Program for veterans and first
2425 responders who are recovering from post-traumatic stress disorder
2526 or traumatic injury; all riders are encouraged to begin riding
2627 independently as soon and as safely as possible, and with the help
2728 of caring guidance and instruction, young clients often exceed
2829 their parents' expectations with what they can accomplish; some of
2930 the program's students have gone on to compete in equestrian shows
3031 for riders with special needs, as well as in open shows for riders
3132 of all ability levels; and
3233 WHEREAS, In just seven years, Stars and Strides Stables has
3334 contributed to the health, happiness, and well-being of many
3435 individuals and gained a well-deserved reputation for excellence,
3536 and David and Teresa Miller may take great pride in the outstanding
3637 program they have built; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3839 Legislature hereby honor the Stars and Strides Stables Therapeutic
3940 Riding Center for the beneficial service it offers to people with
4041 disabilities and extend to David and Teresa Miller sincere best
4142 wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4344 prepared for Stars and Strides as an expression of high regard by
4445 the Texas House of Representatives.
