5	6		WHEREAS, Monsignor Leo Wleczyk is retiring as pastor of

8	8		30, 2019, drawing to a close 54 years of service to the Catholic
9	9		Church; and
10	10		WHEREAS, Born in 1939 to Josie and Leo Wleczyk Sr., Leo
11	11		Wleczyk graduated from Brazosport High School in Freeport in 1957,
12	12		and he attended St. Mary's Seminary in Houston; he was ordained as a
13	13		priest on May 27, 1965; and
14	14		WHEREAS, Father Wleczyk served at St. Mary Catholic Church in
15	15		Port Arthur, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Galveston, and at
16	16		St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baytown before being appointed pastor
17	17		of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palestine in 1975; he went on to
18	18		serve as pastor of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Houston from 1978
19	19		to 1984, and on September 1, 1984, he was elevated to monsignor and
20	20		became the pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church; and
21	21		WHEREAS, Over the course of his exemplary 34-year tenure at
22	22		St. Michael's, Monsignor Wleczyk has overseen the congregation's
23	23		participation in the RENEW spiritual renewal program, the Rite of
24	24		Christian Initiation of Adults program, Spiritualfest, the youth
25	25		ministry, and the ENVISION program, among others; he has also
26	26		supervised a number of improvements to the church campus, including
27	27		the addition of a nursery and an education wing in 1985, the
28	28		installation of stained glass windows in 1986, the construction of
29	29		the Family Life Center in 1993 and the Spiritual Learning Center in
30	30		2000, and the completion of the church's renovation in 2012; and
31	31		WHEREAS, Monsignor Wleczyk served as dean of the Southern
32	32		Deanery from 1984 to 2008, and from 2008 to 2018, he was episcopal
33	33		vicar for the Southern Vicariate; his honors include the Bronze
34	34		Pelican award from the Boy Scouts of America, the St. George emblem
35	35		from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, the Outstanding
36	36		Pastor Award from the Archdiocesan Catholic Committee for Youth
37	37		Organizations, and the St. Christopher Award from the Texas State
38	38		Council of the Knights of Columbus; and
39	39		WHEREAS, For nearly three and a half decades, Monsignor
40	40		Wleczyk has tirelessly dedicated himself to the spiritual welfare
41	41		of the parishioners of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church,
42	42		and he has earned the lasting respect and admiration of all who know
43	43		him; now, therefore, be it
44	44		RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
45	45		Legislature hereby congratulate Monsignor Leo Wleczyk on his
46	46		retirement from St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and
47	47		extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness and
48	48		fulfillment; and, be it further
49	49		RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50		prepared for Monsignor Wleczyk as an expression of high regard by
51	51		the Texas House of Representatives.
