45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The football team from La Vega High School in Waco
67 reached the pinnacle of success by winning the 2018 University
78 Interscholastic League 4A Division 1 state championship; and
89 WHEREAS, After closing out the regular season with seven
910 straight victories, the Pirates maintained their momentum in the
1011 playoffs, defeating Lake Worth, Melissa, Paris, Argyle, and Decatur
1112 High Schools to advance to the December 21 state title contest; and
1213 WHEREAS, Competing in front of a crowd of more than 19,000 at
1314 AT&T Stadium in Arlington, La Vega faced off against Liberty Hill
1415 High School with the state championship on the line; after battling
1516 to a 7-7 tie following two quarters of evenly matched play, the
1617 Pirates opened the throttle in the second half, returning a kickoff
1718 for a touchdown and finding the end zone on two aerial strikes; the
1819 La Vega defense halted a Liberty Hill comeback bid in the fourth
1920 quarter, and the Pirates emerged triumphant by a final score of
2021 35-21 to claim their school's second state title in the past four
2122 years; and
2223 WHEREAS, Offensive Most Valuable Player Malachi Wright
2324 turned in an electrifying performance for La Vega, tallying 163
2425 receiving yards and two scores, including a 90-yard reception from
2526 Ara Rauls that was the longest touchdown pass in 4A title game
2627 history; Donta Stuart's 94-yard kickoff return broke another state
2728 record, and Defensive MVP Jared Rogers collected 15 tackles,
2829 including 12 solo stops; ably guided by head coach Don Hyde and his
2930 assistants, the Pirates received valuable contributions from each
3031 member of the roster over the course of the 2018 campaign; and
3132 WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the
3233 culmination of countless hours of hard work and an unwavering
3334 commitment to excellence, and these talented student-athletes will
3435 treasure the memory of this accomplishment for the rest of their
3536 lives; now, therefore, be it
3637 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3738 Legislature hereby congratulate the La Vega High School football
3839 team on winning the 2018 UIL 4A Division 1 state championship and
3940 extend to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best
4041 wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for the La Vega High School football team as an expression
4344 of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
