| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Pearland are gathering in Austin |

| 6 | 7 | | on February 27, 2019, to celebrate Pearland Day at the State |

| 7 | 8 | | Capitol; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Located in Brazoria County, Pearland was originally |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | established as Mark Belt in 1893, but the following year, its name |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | was changed to reflect the large number of pear trees in the area; |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | by 1898, the town had a newspaper, 12 businesses, and 75 residents; |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | however, its growth slowed considerably, and many of its fruit |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | trees were destroyed when it was hit by the Galveston hurricane in |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | 1900; the planting of oranges and figs helped revive local |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | agriculture, until the freeze of 1918 caused another wave of |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | damage; Pearland bounced back a second time, though, and in 1934, |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | oil and gas were discovered in the area, prompting significant |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | growth in the decades that followed; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, While enjoying the benefits of its proximity to |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Houston and such sites as the Johnson Space Center, Kemah |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Boardwalk, and the beaches in Galveston, Pearland maintains its own |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | unique character; in 1999, it was named an All-America City by the |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | National Civic League, and its notable attractions include the more |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | than 100-year-old Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad Depot, |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Pearland Town Center, and an emerging biotech and manufacturing |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | area known as the Kirby District; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Pearland is fortunate to have a local chamber of |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | commerce that works diligently to further the city's development |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | and keep the citizenry informed on matters that affect the region; |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | the city also boasts a highly rated school system that is committed |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | to helping with workforce development; moreover, the University of |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus is meeting area needs with the |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | addition of a health science building, and the city benefits from an |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | ongoing partnership between the university and Alvin Community |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | College; and |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Over the last 125 years, Pearland has experienced |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | explosive growth, substantial development, and a handful of |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | tragedies along the way, but it would not be what it is today |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | without that history; from humble beginnings to becoming one of the |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | fastest-growing communities in the country, Pearland will continue |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | its neighborly and warm traditions for generations to come; now, |
|---|

| 43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
