| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Athens are gathering in Austin on |

| 6 | 7 | | February 6, 2019, to celebrate Athens Day at the State Capitol; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Athens was first incorporated in 1856, and through |

| 8 | 9 | | the decades, this charming East Texas town has seen significant |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | growth; today, its diverse economic base includes industrial |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | manufacturing and other businesses in addition to farming and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | livestock ventures; education is a key element in the town's |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | productivity, with Trinity Valley Community College and the area's |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | other schools helping residents to prepare for the future; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The county seat of Henderson County, Athens is home |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | to four wineries and a craft brewery, and it has been called the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World for the years when "cowpeas" |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | were a major crop for the local farming community; Athens was also |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | named the Original Home of the Hamburger by the Texas Legislature in |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | tribute to the role that city resident Fletcher Davis played in the |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | creation of this American favorite; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Visitors and residents alike enjoy such cultural |

| 22 | 23 | | institutions as the East Texas Arboretum, the Henderson County |

| 23 | 24 | | Historical Museum, the Henderson County Performing Arts Center, the |

| 24 | 25 | | Cain Center, the Henderson County Fairpark Complex, and the Texas |

| 25 | 26 | | Freshwater Fisheries Center, where 300,000 gallons of aquarium |

| 26 | 27 | | exhibits feature a wide variety of native Texas fish in natural |

| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, This lovely city continues to be one of the Lone Star |

| 29 | 30 | | State's great assets and an outstanding place in which to live, |

| 30 | 31 | | work, and raise a family, and its citizens may indeed take pride in |

| 31 | 32 | | their hometown's ongoing achievements; now, therefore, be it |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 6, 2019, as Athens Day at the |

| 34 | 35 | | State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best |

| 35 | 36 | | wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
