45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Members of the Houston community are gathering
67 together at Evan E. Worthing High School on January 25, 2019, for
78 the school's ribbon-cutting ceremony; and
89 WHEREAS, Founded by Evan E. Worthing to give local African
910 American youth access to quality education, this historic secondary
1011 school first opened its doors on January 27, 1958; Worthing High
1112 School subsequently moved from its original campus on Bellfort
1213 Boulevard, which now hosts Crispus Attucks Middle School, to take
1314 up residence on the corner of Scott Street and Reed Road; and
1415 WHEREAS, The current campus has recently undergone
1516 renovation as part of the Houston Independent School District's
1617 2012 Bond Program; with the completion of the first phase of
1718 construction, a two-story classroom wing with learning centers,
1819 science labs, and a collegiate-style lecture hall opened to
1920 students in August 2016, and the final phase of the project drew to
2021 a close almost two and a half years later; the state-of-the-art
2122 facilities also include career and technology education spaces, a
2223 weight room, competition and auxiliary gyms, a Junior Reserve
2324 Officers' Training Corps area, and a hospitality lab; and
2425 WHEREAS, Part of the Houston Independent School District,
2526 Worthing High School serves more than 800 students in grades 9
2627 through 12; under the expert guidance of current principal
2728 Dr. Khalilah Campbell-Rhone, the dedicated faculty and staff work
2829 tirelessly to equip the school's student body with the knowledge
2930 and skills necessary to build a brighter future; and
3031 WHEREAS, For more than six decades, Worthing High School has
3132 helped its students live up to their full potential, and the newly
3233 renovated campus will enhance the school's efforts in that crucial
3334 endeavor; now, therefore, be it
3435 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3536 Legislature hereby commemorate the ribbon-cutting ceremony at
3637 Worthing High School and extend to all those associated with the
3738 school sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
3839 further
3940 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4041 prepared for Evan E. Worthing High School as an expression of high
4142 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
