5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Houston community are gathering |

6 | 7 | | together at Evan E. Worthing High School on January 25, 2019, for |

7 | 8 | | the school's ribbon-cutting ceremony; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Founded by Evan E. Worthing to give local African |
---|
9 | 10 | | American youth access to quality education, this historic secondary |
---|
10 | 11 | | school first opened its doors on January 27, 1958; Worthing High |
---|
11 | 12 | | School subsequently moved from its original campus on Bellfort |
---|
12 | 13 | | Boulevard, which now hosts Crispus Attucks Middle School, to take |
---|
13 | 14 | | up residence on the corner of Scott Street and Reed Road; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The current campus has recently undergone |
---|
15 | 16 | | renovation as part of the Houston Independent School District's |
---|
16 | 17 | | 2012 Bond Program; with the completion of the first phase of |
---|
17 | 18 | | construction, a two-story classroom wing with learning centers, |
---|
18 | 19 | | science labs, and a collegiate-style lecture hall opened to |
---|
19 | 20 | | students in August 2016, and the final phase of the project drew to |
---|
20 | 21 | | a close almost two and a half years later; the state-of-the-art |
---|
21 | 22 | | facilities also include career and technology education spaces, a |
---|
22 | 23 | | weight room, competition and auxiliary gyms, a Junior Reserve |
---|
23 | 24 | | Officers' Training Corps area, and a hospitality lab; and |

24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Part of the Houston Independent School District, |

25 | 26 | | Worthing High School serves more than 800 students in grades 9 |

26 | 27 | | through 12; under the expert guidance of current principal |
---|
27 | 28 | | Dr. Khalilah Campbell-Rhone, the dedicated faculty and staff work |
---|
28 | 29 | | tirelessly to equip the school's student body with the knowledge |
---|
29 | 30 | | and skills necessary to build a brighter future; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, For more than six decades, Worthing High School has |

31 | 32 | | helped its students live up to their full potential, and the newly |

32 | 33 | | renovated campus will enhance the school's efforts in that crucial |

33 | 34 | | endeavor; now, therefore, be it |

34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

35 | 36 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the ribbon-cutting ceremony at |
