5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The prosperity of the Lone Star State has been |

6 | 7 | | greatly influenced by family farming and ranching, and the Compton |

7 | 8 | | Farm Partnership was officially recognized as heir to this proud |
---|
8 | 9 | | tradition with the acceptance of the Compton Farm in Childress |
---|
9 | 10 | | County into the state's Family Land Heritage Program in 2018; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas Department of Agriculture, |
---|
11 | 12 | | the Family Land Heritage Program honors farms and ranches that have |
---|
12 | 13 | | been in continuous operation by the same family for a century or |
---|
13 | 14 | | more; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1905, William Iley Compton, a native of Arkansas, |
---|
15 | 16 | | arrived in Childress County, and in December 1917, he purchased 160 |
---|
16 | 17 | | acres, where he and his wife, Myrtle, raised dairy cattle and grew |
---|
17 | 18 | | cotton, milo, and wheat; after Mr. Compton's death in 1935, the |
---|
18 | 19 | | title of the property passed to Mrs. Compton, and one of the |
---|
19 | 20 | | couple's sons, Iley, took over the operation of the farm; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Iley Compton acquired an additional 100 acres |
---|
21 | 22 | | adjacent to the original farm in 1938, and four years later, he |
---|
22 | 23 | | bought part of the original property from his mother, purchasing |
---|
23 | 24 | | the remainder in 1976; he and his wife, Ethel, raised six children |
---|
24 | 25 | | on the farm; after Iley Compton's death in 1996, his surviving |
---|
25 | 26 | | children, Peggy, Jean, Mike, Jerry, and Tony, formed the Compton |
---|
26 | 27 | | Farm Partnership to carry on the family's agricultural legacy; |
---|
27 | 28 | | Peggy Compton Williams passed away in 2013, and her siblings have |
---|
28 | 29 | | since maintained the partnership with the participation of her |
---|
29 | 30 | | eldest son, Joe Williams Jr.; the property continues to operate as a |
---|
30 | 31 | | cotton farm today; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, For 100 years, the Compton Farm has played an |
---|
32 | 33 | | important role in Childress County and helped preserve the rich |
---|
33 | 34 | | agricultural tradition of Texas, and it is indeed fitting that the |
---|
34 | 35 | | members of the Compton Farm Partnership be recognized for their |
---|
35 | 36 | | outstanding stewardship; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
---|
37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby congratulate the Compton Farm on its induction |
---|
38 | 39 | | into the Texas Department of Agriculture Family Land Heritage |
---|
39 | 40 | | Program and extend to all those associated with the farm sincere |
---|
40 | 41 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
