45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The prosperity of the Lone Star State has been
67 greatly influenced by family farming and ranching, and the Compton
78 Farm Partnership was officially recognized as heir to this proud
89 tradition with the acceptance of the Compton Farm in Childress
910 County into the state's Family Land Heritage Program in 2018; and
1011 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas Department of Agriculture,
1112 the Family Land Heritage Program honors farms and ranches that have
1213 been in continuous operation by the same family for a century or
1314 more; and
1415 WHEREAS, In 1905, William Iley Compton, a native of Arkansas,
1516 arrived in Childress County, and in December 1917, he purchased 160
1617 acres, where he and his wife, Myrtle, raised dairy cattle and grew
1718 cotton, milo, and wheat; after Mr. Compton's death in 1935, the
1819 title of the property passed to Mrs. Compton, and one of the
1920 couple's sons, Iley, took over the operation of the farm; and
2021 WHEREAS, Iley Compton acquired an additional 100 acres
2122 adjacent to the original farm in 1938, and four years later, he
2223 bought part of the original property from his mother, purchasing
2324 the remainder in 1976; he and his wife, Ethel, raised six children
2425 on the farm; after Iley Compton's death in 1996, his surviving
2526 children, Peggy, Jean, Mike, Jerry, and Tony, formed the Compton
2627 Farm Partnership to carry on the family's agricultural legacy;
2728 Peggy Compton Williams passed away in 2013, and her siblings have
2829 since maintained the partnership with the participation of her
2930 eldest son, Joe Williams Jr.; the property continues to operate as a
3031 cotton farm today; and
3132 WHEREAS, For 100 years, the Compton Farm has played an
3233 important role in Childress County and helped preserve the rich
3334 agricultural tradition of Texas, and it is indeed fitting that the
3435 members of the Compton Farm Partnership be recognized for their
3536 outstanding stewardship; now, therefore, be it
3637 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3738 Legislature hereby congratulate the Compton Farm on its induction
3839 into the Texas Department of Agriculture Family Land Heritage
3940 Program and extend to all those associated with the farm sincere
4041 best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for the Compton Farm Partnership as an expression of high
4344 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
