5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Brownsville are celebrating the |

6 | 7 | | 166th anniversary of the incorporation of their city on February 7, |

7 | 8 | | 2019; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The origins of Brownsville trace back to a small |
---|
9 | 10 | | settlement surrounding Fort Brown, a United States military outpost |
---|
10 | 11 | | constructed in 1846; it was named in honor of Major Jacob Brown, who |
---|
11 | 12 | | was killed during an attack on the fort at the onset of the |
---|
12 | 13 | | Mexican-American War; in 1848, the same year the area became part of |
---|
13 | 14 | | the State of Texas following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the |
---|
14 | 15 | | settlement was established as Brownsville, and the city was |
---|
15 | 16 | | incorporated in 1853; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Brownsville became a center of trade with Mexico and |
---|
17 | 18 | | European nations; the city forged ahead in the 20th century with the |
---|
18 | 19 | | installation of railroads, expanded commercial farming, and, by |
---|
19 | 20 | | 1936, a shipping channel and port to the Gulf of Mexico; as the |
---|
20 | 21 | | population has grown from just 6,000 in 1900 to more than 180,000 |
---|
21 | 22 | | today, the city has maintained its reputation as a hub of |
---|
22 | 23 | | international culture; the largest city in the Rio Grande Valley, |

23 | 24 | | it serves as an active gateway between two countries that are joined |
---|
24 | 25 | | by hundreds of years of custom and family; and |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Brownsville have fostered a tradition |
---|
26 | 27 | | of progress that continues into the new millennium; in 2001 and |
---|
27 | 28 | | 2014, it was named an All-American City by the National Civic League |
---|
28 | 29 | | for its outstanding accomplishments toward improving economic |
---|
29 | 30 | | development, community health, and civic engagement; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build |
---|
31 | 32 | | an even brighter future, the citizens of Brownsville are |
---|
32 | 33 | | justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |

33 | 34 | | honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
34 | 35 | | therefore, be it |

35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 166th anniversary of the |

37 | 38 | | incorporation of Brownsville and extend to its residents sincere |

38 | 39 | | best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
