45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Brownsville are celebrating the
67 166th anniversary of the incorporation of their city on February 7,
78 2019; and
89 WHEREAS, The origins of Brownsville trace back to a small
910 settlement surrounding Fort Brown, a United States military outpost
1011 constructed in 1846; it was named in honor of Major Jacob Brown, who
1112 was killed during an attack on the fort at the onset of the
1213 Mexican-American War; in 1848, the same year the area became part of
1314 the State of Texas following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the
1415 settlement was established as Brownsville, and the city was
1516 incorporated in 1853; and
1617 WHEREAS, Brownsville became a center of trade with Mexico and
1718 European nations; the city forged ahead in the 20th century with the
1819 installation of railroads, expanded commercial farming, and, by
1920 1936, a shipping channel and port to the Gulf of Mexico; as the
2021 population has grown from just 6,000 in 1900 to more than 180,000
2122 today, the city has maintained its reputation as a hub of
2223 international culture; the largest city in the Rio Grande Valley,
2324 it serves as an active gateway between two countries that are joined
2425 by hundreds of years of custom and family; and
2526 WHEREAS, Residents of Brownsville have fostered a tradition
2627 of progress that continues into the new millennium; in 2001 and
2728 2014, it was named an All-American City by the National Civic League
2829 for its outstanding accomplishments toward improving economic
2930 development, community health, and civic engagement; and
3031 WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build
3132 an even brighter future, the citizens of Brownsville are
3233 justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to
3334 honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now,
3435 therefore, be it
3536 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3637 Legislature hereby commemorate the 166th anniversary of the
3738 incorporation of Brownsville and extend to its residents sincere
3839 best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
3940 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4041 prepared for the City of Brownsville as an expression of high regard
4142 by the Texas House of Representatives.
