| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Mission are gathering in Austin on |

| 6 | 7 | | February 13, 2019, to celebrate Mission Day at the State Capitol; |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The city of Mission was founded in 1908, the year the |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Missouri Pacific Railroad established a station in the area, and |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | the city was named for La Lomita Mission, which was located nearby; |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | since then, Mission has grown to be a thriving city with a |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | population of more than 84,000 people; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The first citrus trees in the Rio Grande Valley were |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | planted in the Mission area; today, the citrus industry is a |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | multimillion-dollar business and is celebrated each year at the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Texas Citrus Fiesta; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, A center for international trade and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | entrepreneurism, Mission is a partner of the Anzalduas |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | International Bridge, which provides a vital trade and tourism |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | connection to Mexico; several international manufacturers are |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | located in Mission, including Stanley Black & Decker, Royal |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Technologies, and Southwest Steel Coil, and the city is also home to |

| 23 | 24 | | the Center for Education and Economic Development, a coworking |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | facility managed by Mission EDC; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Recreational opportunities are abundant in Mission, |

| 26 | 27 | | with such attractions as the National Butterfly Center, the World |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Birding Center headquarters, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, |

| 28 | 29 | | and the 10-mile Mission Hike and Bike Trail; and |

| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Mission was immortalized in Larry McMurtry's novel |

| 30 | 31 | | and television miniseries, Lonesome Dove, and notable residents |

| 31 | 32 | | have included United States senator and treasury secretary Lloyd |

| 32 | 33 | | Bentsen and United States congressman Kika de la Garza; moreover, |

| 33 | 34 | | Mission was the childhood home of Tom Landry and a second home to |

| 34 | 35 | | Texas governor Allan Shivers and to three-time presidential |

| 36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Mission Day at the Capitol provides an opportunity |

| 37 | 38 | | to honor the border city's heritage and its many charms, which are |

| 38 | 39 | | enjoyed by residents and vacationers alike; now, therefore, be it |

| 39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 13, 2019, as Mission Day at |

| 41 | 42 | | the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |

| 42 | 43 | | best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin. |
