5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Jasper County lost a respected and much-loved civic |

6 | 7 | | leader with the passing of Bobby Joe Hadnot on August 24, 2018, at |

7 | 8 | | the age of 80; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of the county, Bobby Joe Hadnot |
---|
9 | 10 | | was born on March 27, 1938, to Grady Hadnot and Lorraine McCray |
---|
10 | 11 | | Green, and he benefited in his youth from the guidance and affection |
---|
11 | 12 | | of his grandparents, Tat and Ludy Hadnot and Albert and Francis |
---|
12 | 13 | | McCray; he graduated from J. H. Rowe High School in 1956 and became |
---|
13 | 14 | | a certified electrician after attending Prairie View A&M |
---|
14 | 15 | | University; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Hadnot was drafted into the United States Army |
---|
16 | 17 | | in 1962, and upon completing his military service, he returned to |
---|
17 | 18 | | Jasper County and worked at his paternal grandfather's logging |
---|
18 | 19 | | business and his maternal grandparents' farm; he subsequently began |
---|
19 | 20 | | a successful and trailblazing career with the U.S. Army Corps of |
---|
20 | 21 | | Engineers that spanned 42 years, and he went on to become the first |
---|
21 | 22 | | African American elected president of the corps' local AFL-CIO |
---|
22 | 23 | | trade union; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Hadnot served as |
---|
24 | 25 | | president of Citizens for Progress, an organization that worked to |
---|
25 | 26 | | advance causes of import to Jasper's African American population |
---|
26 | 27 | | during the 1980s and 1990s; in addition, he held leadership |
---|
27 | 28 | | positions as president of the Jasper Rural Water Board and vice |
---|
28 | 29 | | president of the board for the Beech Grove Volunteer Fire |
---|
29 | 30 | | Department, which he played an instrumental role in creating; he |
---|
30 | 31 | | was also a lifelong member of the historic Dixie Baptist Church; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Hadnot was deeply involved in the upkeep of the |
---|
32 | 33 | | Indian Creek Cemetery, where he oversaw a homecoming celebration |
---|
33 | 34 | | every summer; committed to preserving local history, he shared his |
---|
34 | 35 | | knowledge of Jasper County with several organizations, and he |
---|
35 | 36 | | joined together with like-minded citizens to establish the |
---|
36 | 37 | | Community and Family Historical Preservation Association; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Hadnot enjoyed the love |
---|
38 | 39 | | and support of his wife, Ruthie Jean Mitchell Hadnot, with whom he |
---|
39 | 40 | | shared 57 rewarding years of marriage; the couple raised three |
---|
40 | 41 | | children, Vanessa, Valencia, and Dynetro, and were further blessed |
---|
41 | 42 | | with two grandchildren, Daniel and Dymaia; and |
---|
42 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Bobby Joe Hadnot was a devoted family man, a pillar |
---|
43 | 44 | | of his community, and a source of inspiration to countless people, |
---|
44 | 45 | | and he leaves behind a legacy that will long be treasured by those |
---|
45 | 46 | | who held him dear; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
---|
47 | 48 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Bobby Joe Hadnot and |
---|
48 | 49 | | extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn his passing; and, be it |

49 | 50 | | further |
