8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Seeking to end racial discrimination, the Corpus |

9 | 10 | | Christi branch of the NAACP held its first meeting on February 7, |

10 | 11 | | 1919, with a robust total of 56 people stepping forward to take up |
---|
11 | 12 | | the organization's mission; in 1923, the group was forced to cease |
---|
12 | 13 | | operations due to an increase in violence against the area's |
---|
13 | 14 | | African American population, but the chapter's members remained |
---|
14 | 15 | | resolute in their quest for equality; they reorganized and applied |
---|
15 | 16 | | for a new charter on February 2, 1928; and |

16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The H. Boyd Hall Branch has thrived in the decades |

17 | 18 | | since; inspired by the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., its |

18 | 19 | | members took part in the civil rights struggles of the 1950s and |

19 | 20 | | 1960s, and their efforts, combined with those of other activists |

20 | 21 | | around the nation, helped bring about important advances, such as |
---|
21 | 22 | | passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Today, under the direction of current chapter |

23 | 24 | | president Terry Mills, the H. Boyd Hall Branch continues to serve as |
---|
24 | 25 | | a prominent voice championing diversity and inclusion, with |
---|
25 | 26 | | thousands of people regularly turning out to support NAACP events |
---|
26 | 27 | | in the Coastal Bend region; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The H. Boyd Hall Branch of the NAACP has played an |
---|
28 | 29 | | essential role in bringing about progressive change in the Corpus |
---|
29 | 30 | | Christi community and beyond, and its members are indeed deserving |
---|
30 | 31 | | of recognition for their steadfast commitment to the principles of |

31 | 32 | | equal rights and social justice; now, therefore, be it |

32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the H. Boyd |

34 | 35 | | Hall Branch of the NAACP and commend the chapter for its outstanding |
