45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Dr. Suzanne J. Nelson retired as superintendent of
67 the Tuloso-Midway Independent School District on June 30, 2018,
78 after nearly a quarter century of service to that district; and
89 WHEREAS, Sue Nelson began her career in Edmond, Oklahoma,
910 initially working as a teacher and later becoming a middle and high
1011 school principal; she joined Tuloso-Midway ISD in 1984, and after
1112 two years as director of elementary and secondary education, she
1213 was promoted to district superintendent; though she retired in
1314 1998, she went on to serve as superintendent of Eagle Pass ISD and
1415 then once again took charge of the Tuloso-Midway district for a
1516 brief tenure beginning in 2005; after guiding George West ISD, she
1617 returned to Tuloso-Midway for her third tenure as superintendent in
1718 2010; and
1819 WHEREAS, During her years with TMISD, Dr. Nelson led the
1920 district in increasing the diversity of the administrative team and
2021 professional staff, achieving top ratings from the School Financial
2122 Integrity Rating System of Texas, and securing the passage of a $36
2223 million bond package; she was also instrumental in the district's
2324 1994 transition to a year-round school calendar; in recognition of
2425 her many contributions, she was named the 2016 Superintendent of
2526 the Year for Education Service Center Region 2, and the performing
2627 arts center at Tuloso-Midway High School was named in her honor in
2728 2014; and
2829 WHEREAS, A native of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dr. Nelson
2930 holds a bachelor's degree in education, a master's degree in
3031 counseling, and a doctorate in school administration from the
3132 University of Oklahoma, and she was inducted into the OU Education
3233 Hall of Fame in 2018; and
3334 WHEREAS, Through her dedication, professionalism, and
3435 commitment to excellence, Sue Nelson has helped many young Texans
3536 acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed, and she may
3637 indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as she embarks on
3738 the next exciting chapter of her life; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Suzanne J. Nelson on her
4041 retirement as superintendent of the Tuloso-Midway Independent
4142 School District and extend to her sincere best wishes for the
4243 future; and, be it further
4344 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4445 prepared for Dr. Nelson as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4546 House of Representatives.
