45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Mike A. Myers, owner and chair of Myers Financial
67 Corporation, was presented with the Santa Rita Award by The
78 University of Texas System Board of Regents on December 12, 2018;
89 and
910 WHEREAS, The highest honor bestowed by the UT Regents, the
1011 Santa Rita Award is earned by individuals who have demonstrated
1112 concern for the principles of higher education, as well as deep
1213 commitment to the furtherance of the purposes and objectives of The
1314 University of Texas System; and
1415 WHEREAS, A native of the small town of Olney, Mike Myers
1516 learned from his parents the value of hard work and the fulfillment
1617 that can be found in helping others; after first attending Tarleton
1718 State College in Stephenville, he transferred to UT Austin, where
1819 he excelled academically while making his first foray into
1920 entrepreneurship as the owner of a restaurant and catering
2021 business; he received his bachelor's degree in 1959 and his law
2122 degree in 1963 before taking his first job in the office of Governor
2223 John Connally; and
2324 WHEREAS, Mr. Myers expanded his business interests to
2425 encompass community banking, real estate development, and country
2526 club ownership, and today he operates Myers Financial Corporation
2627 alongside Myers Bancshares, Inc., the holding company of the oldest
2728 and largest continually owned independent bank in Tarrant County;
2829 he is also a cofounder and majority partner in The University of
2930 Texas Golf Club in Austin, which has hosted the UT men's and women's
3031 golf teams since 2003; and
3132 WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Myers has been a faithful
3233 and dedicated supporter of his alma mater, providing numerous
3334 endowments for the McCombs School of Business, the Moody College of
3435 Communication, the Colleges of Education, Liberal Arts, and Natural
3536 Sciences, the Office of the Provost, and several graduate studies
3637 programs; he contributed to the expansion and modernization of the
3738 Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, and he and his wife, Sammye
3839 Myers, helped establish what is now known as the Mike A. Myers
3940 Stadium and Soccer Field; he is cofounder of the Foundation for
4041 Texas Excellence Scholars, and he has further served as president
4142 of the Longhorn Foundation and as chair of the UT System
4243 Chancellor's Council; over the years, he has shared his time,
4344 expertise, and resources to benefit other institutions within the
4445 UT system, particularly UT Southwestern, which he served with
4546 distinction as a trustee of the Southwestern Medical Foundation;
4647 and
4748 WHEREAS, Since forming his charitable foundation at the age
4849 of 29, Mr. Myers has made additional contributions in behalf of
4950 education and other causes, and he played a notable role in the
5051 creation of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; in 1990,
5152 he initiated the Myers-LeCroy Scholars Endowed Scholarship program
5253 at the Dallas County Community College District Foundation, and he
5354 was also instrumental in instituting the Rising Star Program at
5455 DCCCD; moreover, he has donated generously to Parkland Memorial
5556 Hospital's Simmons Ambulatory Surgical Center and the "I Stand for
5657 Parkland" campaign, for which a sky bridge was dedicated in his
5758 honor; and
5859 WHEREAS, Other organizations that have benefited from his
5960 volunteer involvement include the Dallas Assembly, the Dallas
6061 Citizens Council, the Texas Longhorn Education Foundation, and the
6162 Cotton Bowl Athletic Association; he currently serves as director
6263 of the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation and as a trustee
6364 emeritus of the UT Law School Foundation, through which he helped
6465 create the Kay Bailey Hutchison Chair in Latin American Law; he was
6566 named the DFW Entrepreneur of the Year in 2017 and was inducted into
6667 the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 2008; in addition, he has been
6768 recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of UT Austin and as a member
6869 of the McCombs School of Business Hall of Fame, and he received UT's
6970 coveted Presidential Citation; and
7071 WHEREAS, Few alumni can claim such a commendable record of
7172 leadership and service to their alma mater as Mike Myers, and this
7273 accomplished businessman, philanthropist, and community leader may
7374 indeed take well-deserved pride in all that he has achieved; now,
7475 therefore, be it
7576 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
7677 Legislature hereby congratulate Mike A. Myers on his receipt of a
7778 Santa Rita Award from The University of Texas System Board of
7879 Regents and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and,
7980 be it further
8081 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
8182 prepared for Mr. Myers as an expression of high regard by the Texas
8283 House of Representatives.
