7 | 8 | | University of Texas System Board of Regents on December 12, 2018; |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The highest honor bestowed by the UT Regents, the |
---|
10 | 11 | | Santa Rita Award is earned by individuals who have demonstrated |
---|
11 | 12 | | concern for the principles of higher education, as well as deep |
---|
12 | 13 | | commitment to the furtherance of the purposes and objectives of The |
---|
13 | 14 | | University of Texas System; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, A native of the small town of Olney, Mike Myers |
---|
15 | 16 | | learned from his parents the value of hard work and the fulfillment |
---|
16 | 17 | | that can be found in helping others; after first attending Tarleton |
---|
17 | 18 | | State College in Stephenville, he transferred to UT Austin, where |
---|
18 | 19 | | he excelled academically while making his first foray into |
---|
19 | 20 | | entrepreneurship as the owner of a restaurant and catering |
---|
20 | 21 | | business; he received his bachelor's degree in 1959 and his law |
---|
21 | 22 | | degree in 1963 before taking his first job in the office of Governor |
---|
22 | 23 | | John Connally; and |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Myers expanded his business interests to |
---|
24 | 25 | | encompass community banking, real estate development, and country |
---|
25 | 26 | | club ownership, and today he operates Myers Financial Corporation |

26 | 27 | | alongside Myers Bancshares, Inc., the holding company of the oldest |
---|
27 | 28 | | and largest continually owned independent bank in Tarrant County; |
---|
28 | 29 | | he is also a cofounder and majority partner in The University of |
---|
29 | 30 | | Texas Golf Club in Austin, which has hosted the UT men's and women's |
---|
30 | 31 | | golf teams since 2003; and |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Myers has been a faithful |
---|
32 | 33 | | and dedicated supporter of his alma mater, providing numerous |
---|
33 | 34 | | endowments for the McCombs School of Business, the Moody College of |
---|
34 | 35 | | Communication, the Colleges of Education, Liberal Arts, and Natural |
---|
35 | 36 | | Sciences, the Office of the Provost, and several graduate studies |
---|
36 | 37 | | programs; he contributed to the expansion and modernization of the |
---|
37 | 38 | | Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, and he and his wife, Sammye |

38 | 39 | | Myers, helped establish what is now known as the Mike A. Myers |

39 | 40 | | Stadium and Soccer Field; he is cofounder of the Foundation for |

40 | 41 | | Texas Excellence Scholars, and he has further served as president |

41 | 42 | | of the Longhorn Foundation and as chair of the UT System |
---|
42 | 43 | | Chancellor's Council; over the years, he has shared his time, |

43 | 44 | | expertise, and resources to benefit other institutions within the |
---|
44 | 45 | | UT system, particularly UT Southwestern, which he served with |

45 | 46 | | distinction as a trustee of the Southwestern Medical Foundation; |

47 | 48 | | WHEREAS, Since forming his charitable foundation at the age |

48 | 49 | | of 29, Mr. Myers has made additional contributions in behalf of |

49 | 50 | | education and other causes, and he played a notable role in the |

50 | 51 | | creation of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; in 1990, |
---|
51 | 52 | | he initiated the Myers-LeCroy Scholars Endowed Scholarship program |
---|
52 | 53 | | at the Dallas County Community College District Foundation, and he |
---|
53 | 54 | | was also instrumental in instituting the Rising Star Program at |
---|
54 | 55 | | DCCCD; moreover, he has donated generously to Parkland Memorial |
---|
55 | 56 | | Hospital's Simmons Ambulatory Surgical Center and the "I Stand for |

56 | 57 | | Parkland" campaign, for which a sky bridge was dedicated in his |

57 | 58 | | honor; and |

58 | 59 | | WHEREAS, Other organizations that have benefited from his |

59 | 60 | | volunteer involvement include the Dallas Assembly, the Dallas |

60 | 61 | | Citizens Council, the Texas Longhorn Education Foundation, and the |

61 | 62 | | Cotton Bowl Athletic Association; he currently serves as director |

62 | 63 | | of the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation and as a trustee |

63 | 64 | | emeritus of the UT Law School Foundation, through which he helped |

64 | 65 | | create the Kay Bailey Hutchison Chair in Latin American Law; he was |

65 | 66 | | named the DFW Entrepreneur of the Year in 2017 and was inducted into |

66 | 67 | | the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 2008; in addition, he has been |

67 | 68 | | recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of UT Austin and as a member |

73 | 74 | | indeed take well-deserved pride in all that he has achieved; now, |
