45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Distinguished citizens of Irving are gathering on
67 February 20, 2019, to celebrate Irving Day at the State Capitol; and
78 WHEREAS, The Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce is the
89 first Five Star Chamber of Commerce in Texas and actively
910 represents the interests of the largest business park in North
1011 Texas; and
1112 WHEREAS, Irving began its period of rapid growth in the
1213 mid-20th century; the University of Dallas enrolled its first
1314 students in 1956, and Irving Community Hospital began treating
1415 patients in 1964; the creation of DFW International Airport and the
1516 creation of Las Colinas and Valley Ranch master-planned residential
1617 communities contributed further to the city's growth; and
1718 WHEREAS, Today, with the first Five Star Chamber of Commerce
1819 in Texas and a population of approximately 240,000, Irving is the
1920 ninth most diverse city in the United States and is known as the
2021 "Headquarters of Headquarters" with more headquarters per capita
2122 than any other city in the nation; Irving is home to more than 8,500
2223 companies, including seven Fortune 500 global headquarters:
2324 ExxonMobil, McKesson, the Fluor Corporation, Kimberly-Clark,
2425 Celanese, Pioneer Natural Resources, and Vistra Energy, and the
2526 Fortune 1000 global headquarters for The Michaels Companies,
2627 Commercial Metals, Darling Ingredients, Flowserve Corporation, and
2728 Nexstar Media Group; other major employers include such companies
2829 as AT&T, ACE Cash Express, Aviall and The Boeing Company, Citi, HMS,
2930 Holt Cat, Microsoft, Oncor, Plastronics Socket Company, Regal
3031 Plastics, and Verizon; and
3132 WHEREAS, Irving's educational resources make it a fine place
3233 to live and work; the University of Dallas, North Lake College, and
3334 eight other institutions of higher education offer opportunities
3435 for study and personal growth; and
3536 WHEREAS, The Irving Arts Center, three symphony orchestras,
3637 and two award-winning theater companies, as well as the gondolas at
3738 the Mandalay Canal, the museum and sculpture of the Mustangs of Las
3839 Colinas, the Toyota Music Factory, and Gables Water Street all
3940 provide entertainment for residents and visitors alike; and
4041 WHEREAS, Benefiting greatly from the farsighted leadership
4142 of mayor Rick Stopfer and city council members John Danish, Allan
4243 Meagher, David Palmer, Phil Riddle, Kyle Taylor, Oscar Ward, Dennis
4344 Webb, and Al Zapanta, Irving is a forward-looking and vibrant city,
4445 and its creative and hardworking citizens are to be commended for
4546 their contributions to the prosperity of the Lone Star State; now,
4647 therefore, be it
4748 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4849 Legislature hereby recognize February 20, 2019, as Irving Day at
4950 the State Capitol and extend to its mayor, city council members,
5051 city manager, corporate executives, chamber representatives, and
5152 other citizens present today a warm welcome to Austin.
