| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Panola County are gathering in Austin |

| 6 | 7 | | on February 19, 2019, to celebrate Panola County Day at the State |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Located in northeastern Texas and forming part of |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | the state's border with Louisiana, Panola County covers more than |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 800 square miles of forests and rolling plains and is traversed by |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | the Sabine River; on March 30, 1846, the Texas Legislature |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | officially created Panola County, and two years later, voters chose |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Carthage as the county seat; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, It is believed that Judge John Allison, a prominent |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | civic leader, suggested the name Panola, which may be derived from |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | the Cherokee word for cotton, ponolo; the area's rich soil was well |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | suited to the crop, and cotton became the county's main |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | agricultural product; today, Panola County enjoys a diversified |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | economy, primarily based in oil and gas production, agriculture, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | food processing, and timber; the lush forests also make the county a |

| 21 | 22 | | popular destination for hiking, birding, and camping enthusiasts, |

| 22 | 23 | | while anglers enjoy the good fishing waters of Martin Creek Lake and |

| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, With nearly 50 Texas Historical Commission markers, |

| 25 | 26 | | Panola County has a rich and fascinating history; it was the |

| 26 | 27 | | birthplace of several notable Texans, including Margie Elizabeth |

| 27 | 28 | | Neal, the first woman elected to serve in the Texas Senate, and |

| 28 | 29 | | country music stars Tex Ritter and Jim Reeves; a museum dedicated to |

| 29 | 30 | | Mr. Ritter and a memorial devoted to Mr. Reeves are located in |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Carthage, as is the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, which honors |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | the legacies of both of these men, along with other country music |

| 32 | 33 | | legends from the state; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Carthage, which was named a National Main Street |

| 34 | 35 | | City in Texas in 2011, is also home to Panola College and the |

| 35 | 36 | | historic Esquire Theater, which hosts the Country Music Hayride |

| 36 | 37 | | live music show every Saturday night; other popular events taking |

| 37 | 38 | | place in the county seat include the Piney Woods Quilt Festival in |

| 38 | 39 | | April and the Potlatch in October, which features a karaoke |
