66 WHEREAS, Distinguished citizens of Irving are gathering on
77 February 20, 2019, to celebrate Irving Day at the State Capitol; and
88 WHEREAS, The Irving-Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce is the
99 first Five Star Chamber of Commerce in Texas and actively
1010 represents the interests of the largest business park in North
1111 Texas; and
1212 WHEREAS, Irving began its period of rapid growth in the
1313 mid-20th century; the University of Dallas enrolled its first
1414 students in 1956, and Irving Community Hospital began treating
1515 patients in 1964; the creation of DFW International Airport and the
1616 creation of Las Colinas and Valley Ranch master-planned residential
1717 communities contributed further to the city's growth; and
1818 WHEREAS, Today, with the first Five Star Chamber of Commerce
1919 in Texas and a population of approximately 240,000, Irving is the
2020 ninth most diverse city in the United States and is known as the
2121 "Headquarters of Headquarters" with more headquarters per capita
2222 than any other city in the nation; Irving is home to more than 8,500
2323 companies, including seven Fortune 500 global headquarters:
2424 ExxonMobil, McKesson, the Fluor Corporation, Kimberly-Clark,
2525 Celanese, Pioneer Natural Resources, and Vistra Energy, and the
2626 Fortune 1000 global headquarters for The Michaels Companies,
2727 Commercial Metals, Darling Ingredients, Flowserve Corporation, and
2828 Nexstar Media Group; other major employers include such companies
2929 as AT&T, ACE Cash Express, Aviall and The Boeing Company, Citi, HMS,
3030 Holt Cat, Microsoft, Oncor, Plastronics Socket Company, Regal
3131 Plastics, and Verizon; and
3232 WHEREAS, Irving's educational resources make it a fine place
3333 to live and work; the University of Dallas, North Lake College, and
3434 eight other institutions of higher education offer opportunities
3535 for study and personal growth; and
3636 WHEREAS, The Irving Arts Center, three symphony orchestras,
3737 and two award-winning theater companies, as well as the gondolas at
3838 the Mandalay Canal, the museum and sculpture of the Mustangs of Las
3939 Colinas, the Toyota Music Factory, and Gables Water Street all
4040 provide entertainment for residents and visitors alike; and
4141 WHEREAS, Benefiting greatly from the farsighted leadership
4242 of mayor Rick Stopfer and city council members John Danish, Allan
4343 Meagher, David Palmer, Phil Riddle, Kyle Taylor, Oscar Ward, Dennis
4444 Webb, and Al Zapanta, Irving is a forward-looking and vibrant city,
4545 and its creative and hardworking citizens are to be commended for
4646 their contributions to the prosperity of the Lone Star State; now,
4747 therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4949 Legislature hereby recognize February 20, 2019, as Irving Day at
5050 the State Capitol and extend to its mayor, city council members,
5151 city manager, corporate executives, chamber representatives, and
5252 other citizens present today a warm welcome to Austin.
