45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and
67 this observance offers a fitting opportunity to honor the Lubbock
78 and South Plains Colon Cancer Prevention Task Force for its work in
89 educating the public about the lifesaving importance of early
910 detection and screening for colorectal cancer; and
1011 WHEREAS, Over the next 10 years, an estimated 1.5 million
1112 American men and women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer,
1213 and as many as 600,000 of them will die from the disease if
1314 preventative measures are not effectively implemented; and
1415 WHEREAS, Most colorectal cancers can be prevented by removing
1516 precancerous polyps from the colon; because polyps and colon
1617 cancers in their early stages typically produce no symptoms, it is
1718 important to be proactive and take advantage of screenings and
1819 early detection technology; and
1920 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society recommends that all men
2021 and women of normal health start preventative screenings for
2122 colorectal cancer at the age of 50, and individuals with a family
2223 history of colon polyps or cancer are advised to begin even sooner;
2324 and
2425 WHEREAS, The Lubbock and South Plains Colon Cancer Prevention
2526 Task Force has been leading the fight against colorectal cancer in
2627 the region since 2001, and through its efforts, a growing number of
2728 at-risk individuals have received screenings; in 2019, the task
2829 force is placing a special year-long emphasis on rallying even
2930 greater support for colon cancer awareness and prevention; this
3031 initiative will help the area to meet the American Cancer Society's
3132 call to increase colon screening rates to 85 percent of the target
3233 age group by the year 2020; and
3334 WHEREAS, The Lubbock and South Plains Colon Cancer Prevention
3435 Task Force is performing a vital public service by helping to ensure
3536 that more cases of colorectal cancer are treated and cured as early
3637 as possible, and the members of the organization are to be commended
3738 for the dedication they are bringing to this crucial endeavor; now,
3839 therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby recognize the Lubbock and South Plains Colon
4142 Cancer Prevention Task Force for its accomplishments in advancing
4243 colorectal cancer prevention and awareness and extend to its
4344 members sincere best wishes for continued success with their
4445 important work; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for the task force as an expression of high regard by the
4748 Texas House of Representatives.
