5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and |

6 | 7 | | this observance offers a fitting opportunity to honor the Lubbock |
---|
7 | 8 | | and South Plains Colon Cancer Prevention Task Force for its work in |
---|
8 | 9 | | educating the public about the lifesaving importance of early |
---|
9 | 10 | | detection and screening for colorectal cancer; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Over the next 10 years, an estimated 1.5 million |
---|
11 | 12 | | American men and women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, |
---|
12 | 13 | | and as many as 600,000 of them will die from the disease if |
---|
13 | 14 | | preventative measures are not effectively implemented; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Most colorectal cancers can be prevented by removing |
---|
15 | 16 | | precancerous polyps from the colon; because polyps and colon |
---|
16 | 17 | | cancers in their early stages typically produce no symptoms, it is |
---|
17 | 18 | | important to be proactive and take advantage of screenings and |
---|
18 | 19 | | early detection technology; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society recommends that all men |
---|
20 | 21 | | and women of normal health start preventative screenings for |
---|
21 | 22 | | colorectal cancer at the age of 50, and individuals with a family |
---|
22 | 23 | | history of colon polyps or cancer are advised to begin even sooner; |
---|
23 | 24 | | and |

24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The Lubbock and South Plains Colon Cancer Prevention |

25 | 26 | | Task Force has been leading the fight against colorectal cancer in |
---|
26 | 27 | | the region since 2001, and through its efforts, a growing number of |
---|
27 | 28 | | at-risk individuals have received screenings; in 2019, the task |
---|
28 | 29 | | force is placing a special year-long emphasis on rallying even |
---|
29 | 30 | | greater support for colon cancer awareness and prevention; this |
---|
30 | 31 | | initiative will help the area to meet the American Cancer Society's |
---|
31 | 32 | | call to increase colon screening rates to 85 percent of the target |
---|
32 | 33 | | age group by the year 2020; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The Lubbock and South Plains Colon Cancer Prevention |
---|
34 | 35 | | Task Force is performing a vital public service by helping to ensure |
---|
35 | 36 | | that more cases of colorectal cancer are treated and cured as early |
---|
36 | 37 | | as possible, and the members of the organization are to be commended |
---|
37 | 38 | | for the dedication they are bringing to this crucial endeavor; now, |

39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby recognize the Lubbock and South Plains Colon |
