8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, One in every nine men is diagnosed with prostate |

9 | 10 | | cancer over the course of his lifetime, and in 2019, experts |

10 | 11 | | estimate that there will be nearly 175,000 new cases and more than |
---|
11 | 12 | | 31,500 deaths from prostate cancer; this year, approximately 10,660 |
---|
12 | 13 | | Texas men are expected to be diagnosed and another 1,900 Texans will |
---|
13 | 14 | | die from the disease; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Although prostate cancer affects men of all races |
---|
15 | 16 | | and socioeconomic levels, African Americans are at an increased |
---|
16 | 17 | | risk; overall, African American men are 1.7 times more likely to be |
---|
17 | 18 | | diagnosed with and 2.3 times more likely to die from prostate cancer |

18 | 19 | | than white men; African American men are also slightly more likely |
---|
19 | 20 | | than white men to be diagnosed with advanced stages of the disease, |

20 | 21 | | which coincide with a far less optimistic prognosis; and |

21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Early detection and treatment offer prostate cancer |

22 | 23 | | patients the best hope for a full recovery, and improving patient |
---|
23 | 24 | | outcomes depends a great deal on increasing public awareness of |
---|
24 | 25 | | prostate cancer and its risk factors; men are advised to consult |
---|
25 | 26 | | with their physicians to assess their individual risk of developing |
---|
26 | 27 | | prostate cancer and to determine whether screenings and other tests |
---|
27 | 28 | | are appropriate; and |
---|
28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Additional focus is needed on the personal and |
---|
29 | 30 | | social burdens of prostate cancer in order to provide patients, |
---|
30 | 31 | | their families, and their caregivers the support they require; |
---|
31 | 32 | | individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer can benefit from |
---|
32 | 33 | | learning about the disease from health care providers, as well as |
---|
33 | 34 | | from taking advantage of support groups and other resources to help |
---|
34 | 35 | | them better cope with their illness and treatment process; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, There are more scientific studies to be done to keep |
---|
36 | 37 | | the medical community on the leading edge of prostate cancer |
---|
37 | 38 | | treatments, and the observance of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month |
---|
38 | 39 | | in September is an opportunity for the State of Texas to affirm its |
---|
39 | 40 | | commitment to prostate cancer research as a priority of great |
---|
40 | 41 | | importance; now, therefore, be it |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
---|
42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby recognize September 2019 as Prostate Cancer |
---|
43 | 44 | | Awareness Month and encourage Texans to seek out more information |
---|
44 | 45 | | about prostate cancer. |
