45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the second most common type of
67 cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among American
78 men; and
89 WHEREAS, One in every nine men is diagnosed with prostate
910 cancer over the course of his lifetime, and in 2019, experts
1011 estimate that there will be nearly 175,000 new cases and more than
1112 31,500 deaths from prostate cancer; this year, approximately 10,660
1213 Texas men are expected to be diagnosed and another 1,900 Texans will
1314 die from the disease; and
1415 WHEREAS, Although prostate cancer affects men of all races
1516 and socioeconomic levels, African Americans are at an increased
1617 risk; overall, African American men are 1.7 times more likely to be
1718 diagnosed with and 2.3 times more likely to die from prostate cancer
1819 than white men; African American men are also slightly more likely
1920 than white men to be diagnosed with advanced stages of the disease,
2021 which coincide with a far less optimistic prognosis; and
2122 WHEREAS, Early detection and treatment offer prostate cancer
2223 patients the best hope for a full recovery, and improving patient
2324 outcomes depends a great deal on increasing public awareness of
2425 prostate cancer and its risk factors; men are advised to consult
2526 with their physicians to assess their individual risk of developing
2627 prostate cancer and to determine whether screenings and other tests
2728 are appropriate; and
2829 WHEREAS, Additional focus is needed on the personal and
2930 social burdens of prostate cancer in order to provide patients,
3031 their families, and their caregivers the support they require;
3132 individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer can benefit from
3233 learning about the disease from health care providers, as well as
3334 from taking advantage of support groups and other resources to help
3435 them better cope with their illness and treatment process; and
3536 WHEREAS, There are more scientific studies to be done to keep
3637 the medical community on the leading edge of prostate cancer
3738 treatments, and the observance of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
3839 in September is an opportunity for the State of Texas to affirm its
3940 commitment to prostate cancer research as a priority of great
4041 importance; now, therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby recognize September 2019 as Prostate Cancer
4344 Awareness Month and encourage Texans to seek out more information
4445 about prostate cancer.
