5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The life of a beloved high school coach drew to a |

6 | 7 | | close with the passing of Teddy Westbrook Tate of Kountze on |

7 | 8 | | February 1, 2019, at the age of 86; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Ted Tate was born in Colmesneil on June 13, 1932, to |

9 | 10 | | Robert and Jessie Tate, and he grew up with the companionship of |
---|
10 | 11 | | three siblings, John, Eugenia, and Aline; after spending his |
---|
11 | 12 | | childhood in Kountze, he lived in Austin during his high school |
---|
12 | 13 | | years; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, An accomplished athlete, Mr. Tate played catcher on |
---|
14 | 15 | | The University of Texas at Austin baseball team in the early 1950s; |
---|
15 | 16 | | he used his collegiate experience as a springboard to the |
---|
16 | 17 | | professional ranks, playing with the Beaumont Exporters |
---|
17 | 18 | | minor-league team; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1962, Mr. Tate began what would become a |
---|
19 | 20 | | legendary coaching career in Kountze; he ultimately guided his high |
---|
20 | 21 | | school teams to state semifinal berths in three different sports, |
---|
21 | 22 | | baseball, basketball, and football; the all-time winningest coach |
---|
22 | 23 | | in school history, he compiled an impressive overall career record |
---|
23 | 24 | | of 502 victories, 258 losses, and 5 ties; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Coach Tate enjoyed the love |
---|
25 | 26 | | and support of his wife, Billie; he was the devoted father of three |
---|
26 | 27 | | children, Tatia, Tanda, and Tray, and he experienced the joy of |
---|
27 | 28 | | welcoming into his family five grandchildren, Taryl, Sydney, Cara, |
---|
28 | 29 | | Tate, and Sterling; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Ted Tate made a positive difference in the lives of |
---|
30 | 31 | | hundreds of Kountze students, and he leaves behind a legacy that |
---|
31 | 32 | | will long be treasured by all those who held him dear; now, |
---|
32 | 33 | | therefore, be it |

33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Teddy Westbrook |

35 | 36 | | Tate and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and his many |

36 | 37 | | friends; and, be it further |
