| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Weatherford College is celebrating its 150th |

| 6 | 7 | | anniversary in 2019, providing a fitting opportunity to pay tribute |

| 7 | 8 | | to this fine institution's long record of achievement; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, One of the oldest colleges in Texas, Weatherford |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | College was established in 1869, before both Texas A&M University |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | and The University of Texas; founded by the Phoenix Lodge No. 273 of |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | the Masons, the school was originally known as the Weatherford |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Masonic Institute and later as Cleveland College; in the 1880s, the |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | school was purchased by the Methodist Church and renamed |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Weatherford College; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Women were first admitted to Weatherford in 1917, |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | and the school officially became a junior college in 1921; its |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | association with the Methodist Church ended in 1949, when the |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | school became a public institution; during the 1960s, Weatherford's |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | student population began to outgrow the original building, called |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Old Main, and in 1968, the school was relocated to its current |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | hilltop location; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Weatherford College today serves Parker, Palo |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Pinto, Hood, Jack, and Wise Counties, and it has educational |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | centers in Mineral Wells and Granbury, as well as a campus between |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Decatur and Bridgeport; the school offers associate and associate |

| 26 | 27 | | of applied science degrees in a wide variety of subjects, including |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | accounting, biology, liberal arts, music, premedicine, teacher |

| 28 | 29 | | education, business administration, criminal justice, fire |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | science, information technology, and occupational therapy, among |
|---|

| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, In January 2019, Weatherford College was named |

| 33 | 34 | | Central Texas at the group's 22nd annual Awards of Excellence in |

| 34 | 35 | | Grand Prairie, and it was cited for its 35 training opportunities |

| 35 | 36 | | for occupations listed on WSNCT's Target Occupations List; and |

| 36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich heritage as they work to |

| 37 | 38 | | prepare for a bright future, the students, faculty, and staff of |

| 38 | 39 | | Weatherford College may indeed take great pride in their |

| 39 | 40 | | institution and its long history of educational excellence; now, |

| 41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the sesquicentennial of Weatherford |

| 44 | 45 | | best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
