| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, For nearly three decades, the African-American |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A recognized affiliate of the National Bar |

| 9 | 10 | | Association, the section was established in the 1990s to enhance |

| 10 | 11 | | the image of African Americans in the law by promoting the highest |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | standards of competence and ethics and offering its members |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | opportunities for professional development, networking, and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | community service; and |

| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Each year, the section hosts the Texas |

| 15 | 16 | | African-American Lawyers Diversity Summit to increase awareness of |

| 16 | 17 | | the services and programs offered by the State Bar of Texas; in |

| 17 | 18 | | addition, the group offers a wide variety of activities to help |

| 18 | 19 | | members reach their professional and educational goals, serves as a |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | voice on public issues affecting its membership and the community |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | at large, and works to help its members find fulfillment in the |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | practice of law; and |

| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In order to promote the development of the next |

| 23 | 24 | | generation of African American lawyers, members of the section |

| 24 | 25 | | regularly mentor high school, college, and law school students |

| 25 | 26 | | across Texas; the group has also worked with the Lawyers' Committee |

| 26 | 27 | | for Civil Rights and the NAACP to combat voter suppression; and |

| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The African-American Lawyers Section plays an |

| 28 | 29 | | important role in the lives and careers of the more than 5,400 |

| 29 | 30 | | African American attorneys in Texas by offering invaluable support, |

| 30 | 31 | | encouragement, and opportunities for fellowship; now, therefore, |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
