45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Representatives from the City of Buda, the Buda
67 Economic Development Corporation, the Buda Area Chamber of
78 Commerce, and other community businesses and organizations are
89 gathering in Austin on February 27, 2019, to celebrate Buda Day at
910 the State Capitol; and
1011 WHEREAS, Established in 1881 as a new depot on the
1112 International-Great Northern Railroad, Buda was known as Du Pre
1213 until the post office requested a name change seven years later; one
1314 explanation for the unique moniker is that Buda comes from the
1415 Spanish word viuda, or widow, in reference to the two widows who
1516 cooked at the Carrington Hotel in the 1880s; and
1617 WHEREAS, The town's early economy centered on supplies and
1718 services for the nearby ranches and dairy farms, and local
1819 businesses formed a chamber of commerce in 1928; Buda was
1920 incorporated 20 years later, and it joined the Hays Consolidated
2021 Independent School District in 1967; the population began to grow
2122 in earnest in the 1980s, and today the city is home to approximately
2223 17,000 people; and
2324 WHEREAS, Buda's natural beauty at the edge of the Texas Hill
2425 Country and the community's preservation of natural spaces helped
2526 the city earn recognition as the Outdoor Capital of Texas by the
2627 Texas Legislature; and
2728 WHEREAS, Buda invites everyone to visit and "Breathe Easy" in
2829 the natural beauty of Onion Creek and the city's pristine
2930 parklands, to enjoy the quaint local shops in the historic Main
3031 Street district, and to attend one of the numerous community
3132 events, such as the Downtown Buda Farmers Market; residents and
3233 visitors alike enjoy a number of annual holiday festivities, such
3334 as the Red, White n' Buda Independence Day Celebration, Boo-da
3435 Halloween, Budafest, and the Buda Trail of Lights; other notable
3536 attractions include the Buda Lions Country Fair and the Wiener Dog
3637 Races held in April; and
3738 WHEREAS, The citizens of Buda are building on an impressive
3839 tradition of achievement and public spirit, and they may indeed
3940 take great pride in their contributions to the story of the Lone
4041 Star State; now, therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4243 Legislature hereby recognize February 27, 2019, as Buda Day at the
4344 State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
4445 wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
