45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Robert G. Packard of Waco, an esteemed educator and
67 a central figure in his community, passed away on January 5, 2019,
78 at the age of 94; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Regina, New Mexico, on August 13, 1924,
910 Robert Packard graduated from Temple High School in 1943, and he
1011 served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II;
1112 following his military tenure, he earned bachelor of science,
1213 master of arts, and doctoral degrees in physics from The University
1314 of Texas at Austin, and in 1952, he was named an associate professor
1415 of physics at Baylor University; he met his future wife, the former
1516 Joyce Hornaday, on the Waco campus, and the couple, who married on
1617 April 15, 1954, went on to share a rewarding union of 64 years; and
1718 WHEREAS, Enjoying a distinguished career at Baylor spanning
1819 nearly six decades, Dr. Packard received the highest honor granted
1920 to the university's faculty members, a master teacher designation,
2021 and his classroom in the Marrs McLean Science Building was renamed
2122 the Robert G. Packard Lecture Hall; renowned for his popular
2223 introductory physics course, this beloved professor returned in
2324 2009 to teach the class for one semester after having retired in
2425 2002; and
2526 WHEREAS, Dr. Packard achieved professor emeritus of physics
2627 status and was the recipient of the university's W. R. White
2728 Meritorious, Collins Outstanding Professor, and Baylor Legacy
2829 Mentor Awards, among others; he was also named an Outstanding
2930 Educator of America, and the Robert G. and Joyce Hornaday Packard
3031 Endowed Scholars Fund was established in honor of Dr. Packard and
3132 his wife, a former assistant dean of women at Baylor; moreover, he
3233 worked tirelessly in behalf of his fellow citizens, holding
3334 numerous volunteer leadership roles; and
3435 WHEREAS, Robert Packard earned the admiration of all who knew
3536 him, inspiring generations of students with his creative teaching
3637 methods, and he leaves behind a legacy that will resonate at Baylor
3738 University and in the Waco community for years to come; now,
3839 therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Robert G. Packard
4142 and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family: to his
4243 wife, Joyce Packard; to his brothers, Charles, Wayne, and
4344 I. B. Packard; to his nieces and nephews; and to his other
4445 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4748 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert
4849 Packard.
