5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Robert G. Packard of Waco, an esteemed educator and |

6 | 7 | | a central figure in his community, passed away on January 5, 2019, |

7 | 8 | | at the age of 94; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Regina, New Mexico, on August 13, 1924, |
---|
9 | 10 | | Robert Packard graduated from Temple High School in 1943, and he |
---|
10 | 11 | | served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II; |
---|
11 | 12 | | following his military tenure, he earned bachelor of science, |
---|
12 | 13 | | master of arts, and doctoral degrees in physics from The University |
---|
13 | 14 | | of Texas at Austin, and in 1952, he was named an associate professor |
---|
14 | 15 | | of physics at Baylor University; he met his future wife, the former |
---|
15 | 16 | | Joyce Hornaday, on the Waco campus, and the couple, who married on |
---|
16 | 17 | | April 15, 1954, went on to share a rewarding union of 64 years; and |

17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Enjoying a distinguished career at Baylor spanning |

18 | 19 | | nearly six decades, Dr. Packard received the highest honor granted |
---|
19 | 20 | | to the university's faculty members, a master teacher designation, |
---|
20 | 21 | | and his classroom in the Marrs McLean Science Building was renamed |
---|
21 | 22 | | the Robert G. Packard Lecture Hall; renowned for his popular |
---|
22 | 23 | | introductory physics course, this beloved professor returned in |
---|
23 | 24 | | 2009 to teach the class for one semester after having retired in |
---|
24 | 25 | | 2002; and |

25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Packard achieved professor emeritus of physics |

26 | 27 | | status and was the recipient of the university's W. R. White |
---|
27 | 28 | | Meritorious, Collins Outstanding Professor, and Baylor Legacy |
---|
28 | 29 | | Mentor Awards, among others; he was also named an Outstanding |
---|
29 | 30 | | Educator of America, and the Robert G. and Joyce Hornaday Packard |
---|
30 | 31 | | Endowed Scholars Fund was established in honor of Dr. Packard and |
---|
31 | 32 | | his wife, a former assistant dean of women at Baylor; moreover, he |
---|
32 | 33 | | worked tirelessly in behalf of his fellow citizens, holding |
---|
33 | 34 | | numerous volunteer leadership roles; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Robert Packard earned the admiration of all who knew |
---|
35 | 36 | | him, inspiring generations of students with his creative teaching |
---|
36 | 37 | | methods, and he leaves behind a legacy that will resonate at Baylor |
---|
37 | 38 | | University and in the Waco community for years to come; now, |

38 | 39 | | therefore, be it |

39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Robert G. Packard |

41 | 42 | | and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family: to his |

42 | 43 | | wife, Joyce Packard; to his brothers, Charles, Wayne, and |

43 | 44 | | I. B. Packard; to his nieces and nephews; and to his other |
