5	5		WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is pleased to
6	6		recognize March 5, 2019, as VIVA San Antonio Day at the State
7	7		Capitol and to welcome the visiting delegation from the Alamo City;
8	8		and
9	9		WHEREAS, The history of San Antonio can be traced back to
10	10		1691, when a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon a
11	11		river and named it San Antonio, in honor of Saint Anthony, whose
12	12		feast day was being celebrated; and
13	13		WHEREAS, The city was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio
14	14		Olivares; he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which would
15	15		become etched in the annals of history in 1836 as the Alamo, the
16	16		site where 189 brave individuals held the mission for 13 days
17	17		against an army of some 4,000 Mexican soldiers; the cry "Remember
18	18		the Alamo" became the rallying point of the Texas Revolution;
19	19		today, the Alamo is a shrine and museum and is widely recognized as
20	20		the cradle of Texas liberty; and
21	21		WHEREAS, San Antonio became formally incorporated in 1837,
22	22		when the fledgling Republic of Texas granted the city a charter; the
23	23		community has since retained its sense of history and tradition
24	24		while carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress; it continues to
25	25		serve as a crossroads and a meeting place, where the rich cultural
26	26		influences of Native Americans, Old Mexico, German immigrants, the
27	27		Wild West, African Americans, and the Deep South mingle and merge;
28	28		and
29	29		WHEREAS, San Antonio is Military City USA; has a proud
30	30		military heritage; great military figures like Pershing, Stilwell,
31	31		Krueger, LeMay, Chennault, and Eisenhower served at San Antonio
32	32		military installations, including Fort Sam Houston, the
33	33		headquarters for the U.S. Army Missions of Army North, Army South,
34	34		Army Installation Management Command, and the only Level One Trauma
35	35		Center in the Department of Defense at San Antonio's Military
36	36		Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center, along with cutting
37	37		edge innovation at the Center for the Intrepid and world renowned
38	38		Burn Center and all Military Medical Education for the joint forces
39	39		to include the Headquarters of Navy Medical and Logistics Training
40	40		Command; as well as home to Joint Base San Antonio- Randolph, the
41	41		home of Air Education and Training Command, the Air Force
42	42		Recruiting Service, Air Force Personnel Center and the Air Force
43	43		Installation Management Support Command; in addition, Joint Base
44	44		San Antonio - Lackland is home to the largest training wing in the
45	45		United States Air Force, and trains all incoming Airmen at Basic
46	46		Military Training, along with vital Air National Guard and the Air
47	47		Force Reserve missions; and
48	48		WHEREAS, Recent years have brought remarkable economic
49	49		development to San Antonio as its skilled workforce, excellent
50	50		institutions of public and higher education, and high quality of
51	51		life have attracted important corporate businesses and industries
52	52		to the city; and
53	53		WHEREAS, The city's chambers of commerce serve as leading
54	54		advocates for the business community and are dedicated to building
55	55		and sustaining San Antonio's diverse and prosperous economy,
56	56		particularly in the major local industries of health care,
57	57		manufacturing, aerospace, and information technology; and
58	58		WHEREAS, San Antonio is the second largest concentration of
59	59		cybersecurity professionals in the United States, comprised of a
60	60		diverse workforce and globally competitive cybersecurity ecosystem
61	61		that is strategically organized through CyberSecurity San Antonio;
62	62		and
63	63		WHEREAS, Millions of visitors a year delight in visiting San
64	64		Antonio; in addition to the Alamo, highlights include La Villita,
65	65		San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio Missions Trail, and the
66	66		famed Paseo del Rio, better known as The Riverwalk; among the other
67	67		attractions that make San Antonio one of the top tourist
68	68		destinations in the country are SeaWorld San Antonio and the Six
69		-	Flags Fiesta Texas theme park as well as the PGA Tour Valero Texas

70	71		Open, the Alamo Bowl, and the five-time world champion San Antonio
71	72		Spurs; and
72	73		WHEREAS, In 2018, the San Antonio Tricentennial Commission
73	74		commemorated the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Mission
74	75		San Antonio de Valero, the Presidio San Antonio de Bejar and the
75	76		City of San Antonio. Three centuries of San Antonio's diverse
76	77		history and culture were honored and explored throughout 2018
77	78		through special events and initiatives; and
78	79		WHEREAS, In April 2019, the city will once again celebrate
79	80		Fiesta San Antonio, the biggest 11-day party in the state; first
80	81		held 120 years ago, the event was founded by a group of women who
81	82		decorated horse-drawn carriages for a parade in front of the Alamo
82	83		and battled with flower blossoms instead of bullets to honor the
83	84		heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto; and
84	85		WHEREAS, San Antonio is truly one of the treasures of the Lone
85	86		Star State, and VIVA San Antonio Day provides a welcome opportunity
86	87		to honor the city and its many fine residents; now, therefore, be it
87	88		RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
88	89		Legislature hereby recognize March 5, 2019, as VIVA San Antonio Day
89	90		at the State Capitol and extend to the members of the visiting
90	91		delegation best wishes for a memorable visit.
