45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The city of Denton lost an esteemed resident with
67 the passing of Dr. Bettye Myers on February 18, 2019, at the age of
78 92; and
89 WHEREAS, Bettye Myers was born to Jay and Gladys Myers on
910 September 26, 1926, in Heavener, Oklahoma, where she grew up with
1011 the companionship of her brother, William; after high school, she
1112 enrolled at Texas Woman's University and graduated in 1946 with a
1213 bachelor's degree in health, physical education, and recreation,
1314 with a minor in government and sociology; the following year, she
1415 earned her master's degree from TWU, and in 1960, she completed her
1516 Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Michigan; and
1617 WHEREAS, A passionate and accomplished educator, Dr. Myers
1718 taught at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Alabama
1819 College, and the University of Michigan, before returning to her
1920 alma mater of TWU as a faculty member in 1961; she was the recipient
2021 of the TWU Cornaro Award for Outstanding Senior Faculty, among
2122 various other accolades recognizing her professional and civic
2223 contributions; after her retirement, she was named a professor
2324 emerita, and in 2016, the university's butterfly garden was named
2425 after her; in addition to her teaching career, she was a
2526 sought-after motivational speaker who conducted hundreds of
2627 workshops and seminars for audiences in the United States and Guam;
2728 and
2829 WHEREAS, Dr. Myers was elected to the Denton Independent
2930 School District Board of Trustees, which she went on to serve as
3031 president, and the district later honored her with the dedication
3132 of a middle school bearing her name; she also benefited numerous
3233 other organizations, including AIDS Services of North Texas, the
3334 Girl Scouts Cross Timbers Council, the Denton Parks Foundation, the
3435 Denton Family Resource Center, Kiwanis International, and the
3536 United Way of Denton County; in recognition of her exemplary civic
3637 leadership, the City of Denton declared September 26, 2006, as
3738 "Bettye Myers Day"; and
3839 WHEREAS, Over the course of 92 years of life well lived,
3940 Dr. Bettye Myers distinguished herself as a pillar of both her
4041 profession and her community, and she will be fondly remembered and
4142 deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know her; now,
4243 therefore, be it
4344 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
4445 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Bettye Myers
4546 and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of her family: to Paula
4647 Fawn Daniels, Anita and Jim Trojan, Kay Lynn and David Huddleston,
4748 Amy and Matt Thielke, Dr. Ryan Trojan and Kaci Trojan, Dr. Brandon
4849 Trojan and Sara Trojan, and Kyle and Rachel Huddleston; to her
4950 longtime friends, Robbie Reid, Pat Miller, and Kay Kolb; and to her
5051 other relatives and friends; and, be it further
5152 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5253 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5354 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Bettye
5455 Myers.
