| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens from Hill County are visiting Austin |

| 6 | 7 | | on February 20, 2019, to celebrate Hill County Day at the State |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Located in North Central Texas east of the Brazos |

| 9 | 10 | | River, Hill County was created from a section of Navarro County by |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | an act of the state legislature on February 7, 1853; it was named |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | for Dr. George Washington Hill, a member of the Congress of the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Republic of Texas and secretary of war and navy under President Sam |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Houston; on May 14, 1853, an election was held in Lexington on |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Jack's Branch to determine the county's first public officials, and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | later that same year, Hillsboro was platted and designated the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | county seat; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Now home to more than 35,000 people, Hill County has |

| 18 | 19 | | grown with the changing times while still maintaining the appeal of |

| 19 | 20 | | a small rural county; the restored county courthouse in Hillsboro, |

| 20 | 21 | | which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, serves |

| 21 | 22 | | as the center for county business; additionally, Hill College |

| 22 | 23 | | provides access to an array of high tech academic and workforce |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | training educational programs, presents a popular performing arts |

| 24 | 25 | | series, and is the site of the Texas Heritage Museum with its |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | extensive collection of Audie Murphy artifacts and a comprehensive |

| 26 | 27 | | library and archive on the Civil War; and |

| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Of special interest to Texas music fans everywhere, |

| 28 | 29 | | Hill County is the birthplace of legendary singer and songwriter |

| 29 | 30 | | Willie Nelson, who was born in Abbott and graduated from high school |

| 32 | 33 | | events each year, among them the Hill County Fair and the Cotton |

| 33 | 34 | | Pickin' Fair in Hillsboro, Pioneer Days in Whitney, the Cinco de |

| 34 | 35 | | Mayo Celebration in Itasca, and Hubbard City Trade Days, and these |

| 35 | 36 | | festivities showcase the county's hospitality, agricultural roots, |

| 36 | 37 | | scenic beauty, and heritage; residents and visitors alike also |

| 37 | 38 | | enjoy the myriad recreational opportunities offered by Lake Whitney |

| 39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Even as they celebrate their rich history, the |

| 42 | 43 | | unique contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |

| 44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 20, 2019, as Hill County Day |
