5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Luke Grumbles of Palestine, an extraordinary young |

6 | 7 | | Texan who demonstrated inspiring courage and character in the face |

7 | 8 | | of adversity, passed away on May 24, 2018, at the age of 10; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Palestine on July 31, 2007, Luke was blessed |
---|
9 | 10 | | with the love and affection of his parents, Dwayne and Cherie Wood |
---|
10 | 11 | | Grumbles, his brother, Jake, and a large extended family; a |
---|
11 | 12 | | fourth-grade student at Neches Elementary School, he was also a |
---|
12 | 13 | | cherished member of Palestine Grace Church; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Luke fought a fierce battle with acute myeloid |
---|
14 | 15 | | leukemia after he was diagnosed with the disease in September 2017, |
---|
15 | 16 | | and he bravely endured a treatment regimen that included several |
---|
16 | 17 | | intense rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant; when |
---|
17 | 18 | | word began to spread about this determined young man and his |
---|
18 | 19 | | struggle against cancer, he received an outpouring of support, |
---|
19 | 20 | | prayers, and encouragement from the Palestine community, which |
---|
20 | 21 | | rallied together to help allay his medical expenses and fund |
---|
21 | 22 | | several special trips for him and his family; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In his final months, Luke was able to go hunting, |
---|
23 | 24 | | fish for gar, ride in a four-wheeler, attend a Texas Rangers |
---|
24 | 25 | | baseball game, visit Disney World, and experience the wonders of |
---|
25 | 26 | | the outdoors at Beavers Bend State Park in Oklahoma; throughout his |
---|
26 | 27 | | treatment, he expressed a sincere interest in helping other |
---|
27 | 28 | | children who were staying at the hospital by doing small things to |
---|
28 | 29 | | make their days brighter, and this compassionate goal led to the |
---|
29 | 30 | | establishment of the LukeStrong Foundation, which is carrying on |
---|
30 | 31 | | his dream of promoting cancer research and lending much-needed |
---|
31 | 32 | | support to children who are fighting cancer; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Although his illness was a challenge that ultimately |
---|
33 | 34 | | proved insurmountable, his desire to bring hope to young patients |
---|
34 | 35 | | like himself made Luke Grumbles a hero in the eyes of all who were |
---|
35 | 36 | | fortunate enough to share in his journey, and he will forever hold a |
---|
36 | 37 | | treasured place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Luke Grumbles and |

39 | 40 | | extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: to his |

40 | 41 | | parents, Dwayne and Cherie Grumbles; to his brother, Jake Grumbles; |

41 | 42 | | to his grandparents, Lalayne and Chuck Rich and Cheryl Wood; to his |

42 | 43 | | great-grandmother, Marinelle Manor; to his great-aunts and -uncle, |
