45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Adelyhda Perez of Uvalde High School once again
67 earned a place in the roll call of state champions when she won the
78 girls' 5A 138-pound weight division at the 2019 University
89 Interscholastic League Wrestling State Tournament; and
910 WHEREAS, "Lala" Perez began her high school wrestling career
1011 in spectacular fashion, capturing a state title as a freshman; she
1112 was defeated in the state final as a sophomore but returned to
1213 championship form as a junior, besting Ashley Cook of Frisco
1314 Liberty High School to win the trophy in the 5A 148-pound
1415 classification in 2018; and
1516 WHEREAS, Continuing her dominance as a senior, Ms. Perez
1617 prevailed at regionals to earn her fourth consecutive trip to the
1718 state tournament; joining the other top high school wrestlers at
1819 the Berry Center in Cypress on February 22 and 23, 2019, Ms. Perez
1920 pinned her first opponent in just 12 seconds; she then dispatched
2021 her next two competitors to set up a rematch with Ms. Cook, this
2122 time in the 5A 138-pound finale; Ms. Perez prevailed by a score of
2223 2-0 and once more experienced the thrill of having the referee raise
2324 her arm in victory in a state title match; and
2425 WHEREAS, In the course of compiling her distinguished high
2526 school record of 152 wins and just 6 losses, Ms. Perez benefited
2627 from the guidance of her coach, Nicholas Hernandez, and of her
2728 father and trainer, John Perez, who introduced his daughter to the
2829 sport at a young age; and
2930 WHEREAS, By achieving the rare feat of winning three state
3031 wrestling championships, Adelyhda Perez has become a source of
3132 great pride to her school and community, and she will cherish the
3233 memories of her outstanding accomplishments for the rest of her
3334 life; now, therefore, be it
3435 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
3536 Legislature hereby congratulate Adelyhda Perez on winning the 2019
3637 wrestling state championship in the girls' 5A 138-pound weight
3738 division and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
3839 success; and, be it further
3940 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4041 prepared for Ms. Perez as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4142 House of Representatives.
